Got my hand brake working right!

I can't tell you how many times I played with this thing but now I have a working hand brake that feels as good as the foot brake now. I went with a new cable and that made all the difference in the world. This cable is off of a late model Honda Rancher 350 4wheeler. It's a much better cable than the 109 clutch cable. I'm a happy guy now. ;D

I made a new cruise control bracket and moved it over a bit so I can operate it with my hand on the grip.

Looks like you also changed the angle it pulled....????? Ya think that made any of the difference in feel? If it works good in the long run, this may be the route I go so as not to break into the Hyd system, and also preserve the use of the foot brake for other riders, or if I sell it (and buy the new touring version...LOL)

Thanks for posting all your trioals and outcomes. It has been a great source of info!!!!

It pulls a lot harder now because of the angle, it feels more like a real front brake now. I have yet to test it but so far it feels great. I got to tell you this was not as easy as I thought it was going to be but for me it was well worth the effort.

I was going to go with the extra two front calipers until I got this right. I thought it would be cool to be able to lock just the front wheels for burnouts and such but after running my cruise control on the jack stands I realized that's not going to work too good because the speed sensor will put the unit in limp mode because the front wheels aren't moving.

I just about have every thing dialed in how I like it now. I'm just waiting for my new Custom Billet Spyder grips and the production highway brackets and new pegs and then I'll be ready for Bikeweek. :doorag:

I never thought about it before but this is a great reason why we don't see any real world dyno numbers.

These things do have a lot of power but does CanAm have something to hide? Or is it purely for safety reasons?

It's just one of those things that makes you go..HMMmmm...

This gets one thinking......how do other vehicles with traction and stability control get dyno readings ??

I would say there has to be a way to disable it. :dontknow:

I would think so too.

California being progressive (should read tax aggressive) they may classify the Spyder to run on a treadmill (dyno) to check smog requirements. One way I hope they don't but on the other hand it would show us how to disable it.

HMMmmm.....

With cars if it has a "limp mode" when on the dyno you unhook the rear wheel sensor so it too reads 0 rpm. This system does not have a trans speed sensor so it too should be able to be "tricked" when on a dyno by removing the rear wheel sensor from it holder. Then it too has no signal of movement.

So how about a switchable sensor? Why remove and relocate it every time. It has to be within tolerance as well. A switch would give you the best of both worlds.

Lamont,
Now that youve had it installed awhile and had a chance to give it some real world use, how do you like the hand brake sys you set up? Does it seem to be holding up well to use?
Could you get by without thinking you need the foot pedal as a backup / supplement?

I appreciate your feedback!
Thanks

I am going to re-work mine one more time and it should work great. I got to look at Magic Mans setup and he has a different angle then mine and he can kick in the abs with the hand brake now. Mine is still weak but now I know it can be fixed.

When I test rode the Spyder one thing I really didn't like was not having a hand brake. I put in my order in June so my Spyder should be here any day now and the first thing I wanted to look at was adding a hand brake. However, I assumed it would involve getting into the hydo system and I worried about how that would affect the ABS. It looks like you have the answer to that problem.

Have you already posted details on how you are doing it somewhere else in this forum or are you going to do that after it is all done and you are happy with the results?

I've done a lot of design in my life (example - see my trike avatar pic) but I've always said that if I can start with something someone else has already done, it would be stupid not to.

I sure would like to get with either you or magic man and get some details sometime. I think this is the route I want to go on my brake conversion. I can install stuff and all that, but not the best at fabricating brackets, etc since i dont have a vast array of tools other than a well stocked hand tool box (Aviation mechanic background)
