Oh my! Well, you asked for it. It goes way back. So I'm never sure where to start.
My brother Don came home from his stint in the Army (Germany) in the mid 70's. He had a very bad attitude. I let him move in with me at the apartment I had then. He was going to buy a VW bus, a surf board, and hit the waves for the rest of his life. But he didn't have the money to do it. Well, I talked him into joining the fire department (same as me). He was pretty much broke so he took the bait. Ended up retiring from there a few years ago. But I digress.
He did get the VW bus, a surf board, etc. He loved VW's. So, I bought this plaster replica of a VW bus not long after> I hand painted it. Doesn't look anything like the one he had as far as paint job goes. But the rest is pretty close. Even the Jerry Can. I gave it to him for a birthday or something. I don't remember.
Fast forward to about 2015. (Please don't hold me to these dates. I'm old and time doesn't register like it used to.)
There is a bar-b-q place just down the street from the shop. Top Choice. Some of the best I've ever had. Daniel and I went there all the time. Of course, everyone has a different idea of what good bar-b-q is. But if you come by the shop around lunch time. I might be persuaded to buy you a meal there. And you can see for yourself. Any excuse, you know. "Keep the customer happy" they say. And doesn't hurt to let the boss eat either. But I digress.
There was a young Mexican guy there that kept calling me Ron Jon. If you're old, like me, you might have heard of him.. He is a famous surfer, surfboard designer, and shaper from way back. He has a million logo pictures. Some of them had VW buses. Example below.
Well, other people thought this was funny so they started calling me Ron Jon as well. Some actually thought that was my name. So, I decided to make a gag T-Shirt and go with it. But I needed a logo.
I called my brother in California and said, "Hey! Do you still have that plaster VW bus I painted for you about 30 years ago?" He said, "Of course! It's on my bedroom dresser! My wife hates it. She's tried to talk me into throwing it out for years. But I'm never going to let it go!" I said, "Take some high quality pictures of it and send them to me. I've got a project I need it for."
And that's exactly what he did. I photoshopped out the background and added an old style longboard. I took it to a local T-Shirt company and asked them to add the 'Surfs Up in East Tennessee', etc. When I came back to get them, the whole crew was there around the sales counter. I thought that was odd but hey, it's East Tennessee and I'm still learning, having immigrated from San Diego. Turns out they all wanted to know why I wanted to open a surf shop here. I told them, 'No competition!' I think that confused them more than the T-Shirt.
I gave the whole crew at Top Choice Bar-B-Q a shirt and that is how it happened.
