How many wheel weights is too many?

So, we've had our new 2016 for a few weeks. Doesn't have 1000 miles on it yet. It has developed a vibration up front. My wife can feel it too when she rides along. It wasn't there before we had it aligned, but I have a hard time believing that an alignment would cause a vibration. In any case, Squared Away looked at it Wed, and Thur when we rode the bike, we noticed the vibration. I took it back to Squared Away and they looked it over and everything seemed to be where it should be. Two things have me curious...there feels to be just a bit of "play" in the front wheels, similar to a wheel bearing issue. I also noticed today after unloading that there were a lot of rocks stuck in the tires (From riding out to Pitbull's new site) I assume....:banghead: Another thought is there are so many wheel weights on each wheel.....12 on one side, 11 on the other:banghead:
I need to ride it again if it EVER stops raining in WI. Why all the wheel weights? If it's that out of balance why not put new tires or wheels on the thing? Not impressed with all those weights. For all I know some fell off to cause the vibration:shocked:

Wheel weights, bad tires, wheel bearings, rocks....etc...ugh....All the balancing products out there seem to be bandaids, I'd like to find the root of the problem

If you have that many weights the tires were improperly balanced OR you have a problem with the tires- PERIOD.

When my bike was delivered I found the same thing. I insisted they re do it, and low and behold i left with 6 on one and 5 on the other.

I recently put Fermoza tires on replacing the CRAP OEMs and they balanced out with TWO weights on each tire. So yes, a GOOD tire makes a world of difference too!

Wheel weights....

Hi Dave here
Having been " past tense" the owner of Delta Tire and Wheel Co. in Concord Ca. & Antioch Ca.
I feel qualified to answer this question.
There is NO amount that is to much or to little, it must be just right to be correctly balanced.
Not knowing how many and the size of each makes it impossible to know for sure.
here is a good rule of thumb, in my opinion ( and you all know about opinions) any tire the size that
fits a small car or a Spyder should not need more than 2 may 3 oz. you may have out of round tires
and or you may have out of round wheels. look at your wheels, notice where the wheel weights are on the wheel, are any of them across from some others, ? lets say you have some weights at 12:00 and you have some at 6:00 then they are counter balancing each other ( NOT GOOD ) give this a try, jack up your Spyder
one side at a time using an automotive jack, spin the tire and look to see if it looks out of round then
do the other side. If you notice any out of round movement hop on it and go to your closest tire dealer
and ask them to put a run out gauge on the tire and the wheel to see. if it is egg shaped they can let the
air out and rotate the tire on the wheel 180 degrees and re-inflate it and check again for out of round.
if it is OK, have them balance it on their spin balance machine and then do the other side the same.
this should not cost more than about $30 or so depending where you live.
If the tire / tires are out of round get rid of them and put on new ones... and I bet the tire shop will have a size that works on your Spyder at a better price than your BRP dealer, however if you find that the wheels are out of round go to the dealer and have them replace them with round wheels. NOTE: this is a very common problem with cars and light trucks it is just that you don't feel it near as much as you do on a Spyder.
Good luck and PLEASE let us all know what you find.

Dave

.....Dear Dave .....the OP has a NEW 2016 ....IMHO , ( as I said in my post #2. ) He shouldn't have to do didly squat , He just bought that Spyder and it's a Warranty issue ...... and the DEALER should FIX IT !!!!!!!! .................. again , imho ..... Mike

I agree completely with what you are saying, Mike, but there seems to be such a high percentage of dealers that bob and weave these days that it is best approaching them "fully armed" to reduce the chance of them keeping your Spyder for "a time" and then sending you away with a less than satisfactory solution. I'd be performing some of Dave's tests and using that as a baseball bat.;)

It may be tires, but give a good inspection to the drive belt and the two pulleys.

Ensure each tooth valley is clear and free of a stone or stones that may have wedged into the pulley upsetting and even damaging the belt.

Others have posted here new strange vibrations and found debris in the pulley.

All the best with it.
