The Candy Apple Red 500cc Mach III and the Yellow/White 350cc Avenger. The Avenger had 40 hp when the Honda 350 had 36. The Kawasaki weighed 330 and the Honda weighed 375. The big difference between the 350 Kawaski and the 500 Mach III was the lack of sanity. That Mach III was everything and more, exactly as this guy says. He much have ridden one to get it this right.
The Mach III had 60 hp stock and weighed 384 pounds. And this was stock. Guys were getting up to 85 hp with custom expansion chambers mounted. In comparison, the Honda CB500 put out 48 hp and weighed 420 lbs.
The Mach III was an insane machine. All it did was go. It didn't stop, turn, or offer stability over 100 mph (though it would do 125). You could not allow the RPM to reach 5,000 RPM in 1st gear if you didn't want to ground loop onto your back. This is NOT an exaggeration.
You say, 'Ron, why not just ride it rationally?'. You couldn't, is the short answer. It had surface gap spark plugs in and attempt to keep them from fowling. But if it helped, it didn't help much. If you didn't ride it like you were at the drag strip, it would foul a plug in a heartbeat. Cleaning the plugs was a waste of time. I have no idea why, but if you fouled a plug, you could clean it to look better than brand new and it would foul again in short order no matter how you rode it.
In short! I loved it! Click on the link below to see what it was like to be young and crazy in 1970.
