• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Limp Mode

Questions

New member
Sorry to be so ignorant but my wife is new to riding a spyder and we hear about this limp mode. What does that mean exactly so we'll know?

Thanks

The Spyder has a number of computers that monitor your bike. When something is out of spec enough to cause serious damage, like brake malfunction or electrical failure or it's a full moon on a Tuesday you will experience the dreaded Limp Mode. This reduces your speed significantly, provides for entertaining hysterics on you're control panel and a slow ride home. I am sure some folks will give you a more technical explanation but that about it. You can clear limp mode buy several on and off turns of the ignition key (5) or removing the key from the bike and walking away for a few min. This will clear it if the cause was just a displaced fuse or relay. Things to check first are; loose fuses and relays, loose negative ground on the battery, Throttle Body issues, keeping your foot on the brake to long while moving, and other items. Search the forum for more information. By the way despite what you may read in the forum it is not that common on most Spyders but if your bike has an unresolved issue it could be common until addressed.

Limp mode is a protective system, in which the vehicle limits the speed or rpm when it senses certain fault codes. Some vehicles also limit which gears can be selected, but the Spyder doesn't. Many feel that the Spyder limp mode (especially the RT) is overly sensitive, and is triggered in less than crucial situations. I tend to agree...although I feel it has a purpose for some types of failures. BRP has recently released an update to the computer(s) that makes limp mode less drastic. If you get limp mode, you will know it. The display will show an orange warning, and say "Limp Home Mode". Your rpm will be limited to 3,500 or so...no matter what gear you are in. This used to happen suddenly, not sure if new update changes that.

I would not fear limp mode, just because it shows up here a lot. It is a giant pain in the butt, especially if it comes on at speed (common with the old firmware versions), but many riders have never seen it, and others have seen it sparingly. The Internet tends to magnify everything. Remember, if it does happen, it is trying to tell you something serious. It may hit you in the head with a hammer to get your attention, but the message is important (for the most part). It is usually triggered to warn of a failure of a critical system, like the ABS or VSS, or imminent chance of engine failure, like low oil pressure. If it wasn't so easily triggered, giving false alarms, people probably wouldn't complain, but sometimes it seems like the boy that cried "Wolf!"
