[Questions]

I'm still recovering from a July 4th accident when I nodded of and rode my Goldwing in the ditch flipping end over end three times. To make a long story short I spent over two months in the hospital before coming home to finish my recovery. I have one more surgery on Dec 9th and then Humpy Dumpy should be put back together again.

My wife, who by the way was on her own bike, is insisting that I get a trike and I must say the Spyder does intrigue me. I'm concern about accessories such as bags, larger windshield, hitch, etc. and would appreciate feedback from you veteran Sypders. In return I'm more than happy to help answer GPS questions, especially those related to Garmin. I have a very extensive collection of custom POI's and routes for most every state. But for know I need to better understand the Spyder and it's advantages over a conversion kit. Thanks.

welcome Sorry to hear about your accident w/ your Wing and I'm glad that they are putting you back together again! I don't have all the accessories on my bike (I prefer nothing on it) but just the trunk alone has a ton of room and there are alot of people who have all the bells & whistles on this forum. The Spyder does ride awesome - sticks like glue to the road. Goes fast, is fun! I was gonna get a conventional trike too but then I read things that they flip and stuff and hubby (who is HDX on here) said he'd rather see me on the :spyder:than a conventional trike. I think they must be safer w/ the two wheels in the front. I can't imagine screaming around a corner in a conventional trike.

Anyway, find a dealer near you and test drive one! You'll love it!

I have a Bushtec hitch and trailer and the Spyder handles it just fine. I've been cross country on the spyder and my longest day trip so far was 1200 miles in 19 hours. I did take 1 hour nap but I did that at a rest stop instead on on the road.:joke: Right now I have 25K on my Spyder in less than a year. :doorag:

Having had a 2004 Goldwing, and a tent trailer, I can say I really enjoy the Spyder over the Wing. It handles a trailer just fine. A Spyder is referred to as a reverse trike. It is inherently hugely more stable than a conversion trike for one main reason. A Goldwing conversion ( by anyof the trike conversions out there) suffers from a conflict of dynamics. At the front it has motorcycle geometry ( forks, steering head yada yada) this requires the vehicle to lean to allow it to change course. Once you place two wheels on the back, you now have an autombile type of dynamic on the rear that is in constant state of conflict with the dynamics of the front. For example....when riding at 65 mph, swerve hard to miss something in the road and see what happens. By the way let me know how long the hospital stay is - it will flip. We all learned that trick when we rode tricycles at the age of 5 years old remember? A Spyder or reverse trike setuip has only one dynamic to contend with, that of a traditional vehicle. Oh yes it will flip also, but not doing the same manuever. They teach very little about evasive riding techniques on a conversion trike because the liability is too great. You also do not need to swerve as much to miss a problem on the road or worry about the crash becasue simply hitting a pot hole or small rodent wont land you in the ER like it would on a two wheeler. By the way, Corbin makes bags for the Spyder. I prefer the trailer versus the bags. I am in the process of changing handlebars to accomidate both a CB/intercomm, and a marine stereo/cd controller and speakers. Highway pegs, floor boards and an ever growing variety of accessories are popping up for the Spyder. welcome Glad you are doing well with your recovery. From a novice to the byke world - I cannot image ryding anything but my :spyder:. It is the best open air experience in the world. While a 2-wheeler intrigues me I know that with my :spyder: I am safer and can handle things better with my 3 wheels. I have a bad back and knees; i don't have to balance a 1/2 ton of metal. Mend well and again welcome to our little piece of heaven.

Glad to hear you are recovering well. So sorry you had to go through anything like that at all. I love my spyder as does my husband. To answer a lot of your questions, you should check out the MyMods forum on this page. This is a great way to see what everyone has done with their spyder and who likes what. Everyone has an opinion, you won't like every idea but you'll get a lot of great ones to choose from.

I know can’t compare to what you are going through due to the fact that I have been in a wheelchair all my life. But I love your suck it up attitude. I try to reflect that same attitude to a cousin that lost a leg in a construction accident about two years ago. I know it is harsh motto but if you gonna let life pass you by dwelling on the pain then you will let the pain win your life over. If you could see me bang my body around the house because I don’t use a wheelchair at all in the house I crawl it all over then you would understand more why I am that way. Most of the accessories I learned about was here on SpyderLovers.com but to do some good price comparison try Google Shopping and if not Ebay is where I got most of my stuff good luck with your surgery my prayers will be with you hope to have the honor to ride with you some day.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery. I just got my Spyder Nov 1st and have spent a lot of time so far trying to figure out what mods I want and the order I want to get them. I got my Spyder at Hicklin Power Sports just down the road from you in Des Moines.

One suggestion I would make if you decided to get one, is don't upgrade your windshield at the dealership. After seeing what's available I sure wish I would have saved my money.

I hope you are all healed up by the time our Iowa weather turns nice.
