newbie question about trailer hitch

Hi, I am new to posting on this forum and picking up my new black 2014 RT, have ridden Spyders and am comfortable riding one. I currently have an 1800 Gold Wing and pull a Leesure Lite Camper and wish to continue doing so with the Spyder. I understand that there is an OEM trailer hitch available and that there is an aftermarket one also. The OEM mounts to the rear axle and the aftermarket one I have heard about mounts to the frame and the load is born by the suspension. Has anyone had experience with either one and what are the pro's and con's.
Thanks for any input
Andy

trailer hitch??

Hi Howard, glad to know you had a good time, but which trailer hitch did you use, the OEM or an aftermarket one
Andy

We pulled a very loaded RT-622 through all the lower 48 this summer using the OEM hitch without a problem (mechanical). We did have a wiring harness problem that BRP took care of under warranty.

There are a lot of posts on here about trailer use and hitches. Advanced search would probably give you enough info for a days reading.

Stick with the OEM Trailer hitch. It can be installed and removed without pulling the axial. The After market hitch requires you to pull the axial to mount the two side pieces that hold the hitch frame. Another bad thing about the aftermarket design is it will mess up the threads on the axial if you decide to totally remove the hitch. When you pull the axial you should have the belt aligned and the belt tension set again with the proper tools.
I also read somewhere here that not using an OEM trailer hitch would could void the bikes warranty. That's one reason we went OEM on the hitch.

hitch question

Mike, thanks for the PM and thanks to all who answered with good advice. I helped a friend change his rear tire on an 09-RT and I see the wisdom on going with the OEM and not having to realign the toein and retension the belt. Looks like I will open my wallet to BRP.
Thanks
Andy

By federal law in the US manufacturers cannot void a warranty on a vehicle due to the use of non-OEM parts or accessories. They can decline to warranty any defect or damage caused by the use of non-OEM products. For example, you put on a non-OEM hitch and your radio goes out. They can't decline warranty on the radio due to the non-OEM hitch.

the om hitch is so simple to install and remove. I think it is a slam dunk for it. It is expensive but it is just a one time thing, you will be happy with it.

Have 14 RT/L and recommend the swing arm mounted hitch due to the fact that the shock does bare the weight of the trailer and is more stable in corners and d/n upset the machine in anyway.I used to have an 03 G/W and towed an ALUMA trailer(approx. 225-250Lbs when packed for a trip/wifes fault!!)and d/n like the extra load on the rear shock. The :spyder2:handles the trailer even better than the G/W did. Good luck with you're choice. RIDE HARD/RIDE SAFE.Mad Mac....

They both mount to the swing arm and the hitch load transfers directly to the tire. Neither one transfers any load to the suspension. The OEM one has some rubber shock bushings to absorb some of the vibration between the swing arm and the hitch.
