• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Route planning for GPS

I know this has been talked about before. I did a search - but what I found was old (in software lifespan time).

Looking for recommendations on PC/Mac software to plan routes for later transfer to my Garmin. I use Microsoft Streets & Trips but my version is getting pretty old and you can't get map updates. Or updates of any kind. MS stopped supporting it. So what's best to use now?

Route Planning

I use Garmin Base Camp. Plan a tip and then sent it to your GPS. They sell life time up dates on your maps.
Go to Garmin on line to check it out.

I use the on-line version of Harley-Davidson Ride Planner. It works pretty good with my Garmin GPS.

BaseCamp is a solution and free to boot

If you have a Garmin unit which you indicate you have, BaseCamp is a free download for trip planning. Which Garmin do you have ?? See link for free download.

Basecamp has a learning curve to get over, but once you are there you will never look back. Take a look here for learning the software. This is a group I associate with and EasyEd is top notch in this area.

Thanks for the link. I tried BaseCamp years ago but found it such a pain that I stuck with Streets & Trips. Guess I'll give BaseCamp a try again and the tips should really help.

Basecamp is good once you master it - but most find the learning curve too frustrating. I've used Tyre since before BC. It's much easier to use and the basic is free. I'm currently using over 16 custom routes, all hundreds of miles long, totaling over 4,300 miles. Created them in Tyre easily and seamlessly copied them to my Garmin Zumo. No navigation errors after 1600 miles.

Tyre doesn't pass virus checker

Yup, I'd like something easier to use than BaseCamp. But I'm not willing to risk my PC when the virus detection software flags Tyre as an infected site.

Here's a simple process. Go to ridewithgps.com, a bicyclist's route planning site, free and very easy to use based on Google Maps. Sign up, create your route, export it to your computer as a .gpx track file. Go to Basecamp and import it to "My Collection" as a track then double click the track and create a route. Plug your GPS into computer and drag the route to "Internal Storage" and you're all set to import it as a route on your GPS. Disconnect your GPS from the computer, turn it on and it will tell you you have a new route to import; do so.

I've used ridewithgps for many years and find it very fast to create routes, much faster than slogging through Basecamp. PM me if you'd like some small tips about using it.

Eventually I will get proficient with Basecamp.

Another option

Also with ridewithgps you can go to Search Routes and preview other people's routes in your area and download them to your device. Going out today using the 3 day trial version for $2.

I use "mapsource" to plan routes and transfer them to my Garmin. I purchased the lifetime map upgrades and the program works extremely well with any Garmin Product. I have it on my laptop and I'm using Windows 8.1 with no problems. I would recommend checking this out. If my memory serves me, the program actually came with the first Gamrin I bought a few years ago and I have put it on every new Laptop I've purchased over the years and it has worked with no issues.

Thanks,
Steve
