Some questions on the 2015 Spyder RT Limited

I am close to purchasing a 2015 RT Limited and have several questions.

1. Seats. Is it necessary to change to seats?
OEM Comfort seat or others.

The Comfort seats specs show 2" set back...Does this make the passenger seat area smaller. Pretty small as is.

Is this a good idea?

You would think for what they are charging, it should already come with the best seat.

2. Also, the Dealer insists that you do not need the BajaRon Sway Bar and Links or Shocks replacements. He tells me that this was true for the 2013 and earlier models.

There seems to be a difference of opinion from what I have seen on this Forum.

3. Is it worth it to purchase the Tri-Axis adjustable handlebar?

4. I did a test ride and it seems that the shifting of the gears is rather clunky. Is this normal?

Thanks for your help.

The stock seat in 2014 changed to a more comfortable seat, I have not changed seats but do use an Airhawk "R" cushion most times.

Yes

No

This depends on how aggressive a driver you are, I got the upgrade and like it (BajaRon bar and Links)

There seems to be a difference of opinion from what I have seen on this Forum.

3. Is it worth it to purchase the Tri-Axis adjustable handlebar?

Can't help here, I don't Know.

When you shift gears at the proper times, they are not clunky, First and reverse are clunky.

Thanks for your help.

My suggestion is usually to drive your new :spyder2: about 1000 miles or so before you start making any of the above mods. Your likes and dislikes will be well known by then.

Clunky shifting normally occurs if you are not in the sweet spot. Try between 3000 - 3500 rpms. Experiment and you will find it.

I like the custom dynamics light bar on the trunk, and I have replaced every OEM seat I have had. Currently, we are both running BRP comfort seats. I like the set back of 2" and the slightly firmer padding. I gave my OEM seat 15,000 miles before I switch out this last time.

15,000 mile break in on your seat and you did not like it!!! Most of these folks will never put fifteen thousand miles on their Spyder in three years. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

I just wanted to make sure that I really, really, did not like the OEM this go around. :roflblack::roflblack:

My opinion with the seat is that it depends on your height and arm length. Both my wife and I are shorter. Me being the taller at 5 8. We both like an upright posture, not layed back or leaning forward. So the 2015 standard is just right. I do think I will look at getting backrest but trying to decide between Brp or ultimate. And (like my brother in law) some people just like to buy and add things. I think those same people would even if they bought a lamborghini.

Thanks for you comments.

I had backrests on every bike I owned, except for a dirt bike I once bought when I wasn't thinking straight.

I have to laugh, this is my first post, and will be purchasing my first spyder, a rts special this week. I have similar questions, what I was not prepared for was the front stability. I found the roll in slight turns rather excessive, the dealer actually was upset by my observation, a Baja Ron bar is first on my list. After reading another post tire pressure is first on my list. Can't wait!

Harmony,

I didn't go fast enough on the test ride to feel much. I had my wife in back of me and everytime I accelerated, her helmet would hit the back of my head.

Hope you enjoy your new ride.

Necessary? It's never necessary but if you find something more comfortable . . . I went with Corbin needed more lower back support and stiffer seat.

Again, depends on passenger. My Corbin lost about 1.5 inches in the rear but wife is still comfortable.

You would think for what they are charging, it should already come with the best seat.

A Harley sells for about 5K more and only comes with a "standard" seat. Not uncommon in the MC world.

Well, I disagree with your dealer. The standard links are plastic and the bearings in those links are EXTREMELY difficult to move. You may be able to get away without the bar, but not the links.

3. Is it worth it to purchase the Tri-Axis adjustable handlebar?

If you are comfortable with your driving position, no. Otherwise Yes!

4. I did a test ride and it seems that the shifting of the gears is rather clunky. Is this normal?

Once you bring it in for your first service (3000 miles) go with FULL SYNTHETIC, that will help clear up the "clunks"

Thanks for your help.

I have the standard seat with an Airhawk R and like it very much. I don't know anything about the "comfort seat". Personally I'm going to get my redone by Russell this fall as he does the best seat I've ever had. I'm choosing fall as the wait time is much shorter.

2. Also, the Dealer insists that you do not need the BajaRon Sway Bar and Links or Shocks replacements. He tells me that this was true for the 2013 and earlier models.

I put the BajaRon Sway Bar on my 2015 RT Ltd and love it. You sure don't have to, but I'm glad I did. It was my first upgrade.

3. Is it worth it to purchase the Tri-Axis adjustable handlebar?

For me it absolutely was as I'm only 5'8" and I needed bars that were closer to me. With the Tri-Axis I have it perfect! If you don't need it, why spend the extra dollars.

4. I did a test ride and it seems that the shifting of the gears is rather clunky. Is this normal?

I don't know if you are speaking of the manual or SE6. If you are speaking of the SE6 and you've not ridden this bike much then I'm not surprised at your thinking. Once I learned what the bike liked and learned to keep the throttle in the same place (not increasing or decreasing), mine shifts like butter. In Eco mode it likes me to shift at a lower RPM than in non-Eco mode. Personally I'm very happy with Eco mode and I love the 40MPG I'm getting on the bike.

Good luck!

Rob

Bob S,

Lol, my wife did the same thing, we were fortunate enough to have a test ride that was city and highway. The sway was present at all speeds but improved with stiffening the rear shock, I forgot about the tire pressure at the time. As a newbie rider time in the saddle will be my friend. Thanks and congrats with your future purchase.

3. Is it worth it to purchase the Tri-Axis adjustable handlebar?
Right off the bat, no. Ride the bike a few thousand miles. You just may find the stock bars work quite well. If they don't, then consider getting the Tri-Axis handlebars, but look for a good price. The MSRP is pretty steep.

Two sides of the coin. The plus is that they are very adjustable and the range of adjustment is wide, so you should be able to find just the right position for your arms, elbows, and shoulders. The downside is that once you find the right position you may never change them again so you have spent a lot of money for adjust-ability that you use only once. Sadly, there is no good alternative.
