Spluttering and backfire

Hi,
I installed a free flow pipe (from a stock) onto my 2009 RS, now my bike backfires and when the weather is hot it splutters.
Any ideas on what can be wrong / what i can do to fix it?

Thanks :)

Yup; your bike is now running lean...
You'll probably need to need one of those aftermarket fuel controllers to it...

Oh... :welcome:

Welcome to the SpyderHood- Teddy did a little dig'n for you and found the following..

http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/...-i-need-a-juice-box&highlight=power+commander

Most that change the exhaust system have similar issues as you and they seem to report that installing either a JuiceBox or Power Cammandor/Auto Tune seems to be the best way to correct the air/fuel ratio back to where it needs to be to prevent said issues.

The above is just one link to many many threads discussing the pros & cons. If you use the search feature on the SpyderLovers Forum & type in Fuel Controller or similar, you can find many more threads discussing the issue. Welcome to the SpyderHood

Thanks for the welcome!
I wish i knew this sooner! i have been riding like this for about 5000km now, its only started spluttering on hot days in the last 1000km, so i really hope there isnt any damage to my engine?! :(
I have already changed back to stock pipe. Will have to look into getting a juicebox ect for my free flow pipe

1st things first.................. check your exhaust gaskets. If they are bad replace them with the Honda replacements.

If your gaskets are good, IMO look for a used Evo 02 modifier. This will eliminate the poping on decel for a fair price. I really believe site sponsors are missing out not bringing this product back into production. :dontknow:

If you cant' find a 02 mod, you will have to spend the extra and purchase a fuel controler. Good luck to you.

Controller..!!

there are many aftermarket pipes out there and many need the fuel controller. Most will let you know or those that install the pipe will. Some pipes work fine without mods. You may have now burned out the exhaust gaskets causing the popping. There are some honda gaskets that work much better (2). There are threads here with the part number or some who knows will post it for you. Welcome to the place for all your answers...enjoy the ryde...:ohyea:

Honda gasket part# is 18392-mam000

If you have a true free flow exhaust, my past experience says the O2 modifier will help, but not fix. A power Commander 5 w/auto tune was my solution, but a Juicebox Pro will eliminate the problems, also.

The guy who installed the pipe didnt put a gasget on it, just a snug fit. I tried to feel if there was any air escaping and i couldnt feel anything. Its odd that it only started happening recently, and it is much worse when the outside temp is hot.

Is there a problem buying a second hand power commander / juicebox? What i have seen second hand is an advert that says that the unit is for a certain bike. Once it is installed on a bike, can it be used for my bike?
Would this work?

No issue with buying used, just make sure it's for a CAN AM SPYDER RS, the one you link is for a suzuki and will not work ....

Most free flow pipes do not need a gasket at that location you checked...... The video I made below will give you a good idea of what I'm saying and the part number for the replacements that can be purchased at any Honda motorcycle dealer. Keep in mind after you burn your gaskets in, you will have to re-tourqe the 10mm bolt.

If you have never took your Spyder apart, than click the red link on the very bottom of my post.

Okay, i understand which gasket you're talking about... so now that i have changed back to stock pipe, will it be safe to say that if there is no popping or backfire, that my gaskets are fine? And i will have to buy a juicebox / ect?

Did it pop when you first put the pipe on? Did it pop when the weather was cooler?
Is it true backfire or just an exhaust popping noise on decel or gear changes.....There is a BIG difference.

If it's something that just started and/or only happens when it's HOT then you are likely not running lean. You have something else going on.
Motors run richer in the heat, not leaner. Popping can also be due to being slightly over rich. The unburnt fuel ignites in the exhaust.

I've found by monitoring AFR that the stock computer does a pretty good job at adjusting for fuel delivery with only a pipe installed. I have yet to see any very lean AFR numbers with only a pipe installed.

Many machines just pop. You won't hear much popping/if any popping with the stock exhaust. It just muffles to much. However, once you swap to a more open exhaust the pop is more audible. I wouldn't sweat it to much.

So I have a 2011 RS SE5 with hindle, power commander, kewl metal air intake 02 modfier and my bike pops for only a short time when it's cold and only when shifting up through the gears. It doesn't pop when downshifting. Any ideas I'm bringing my bike tomorrow for 22 k service and rear tire replacement. Went with he Kuhmo estata platinum 225/60r/15. Any ideas?

The bike always popped when i had the pipe on, but recently when it gets hot outside the pipe splutters a lot and on odd occasions the check engine light has come on. (oil level was fine)

You have something else going on. The pipe itself is not your issue, its just making your problem more noticeable. Check the codes. Could be any number of things like exhaust gaskets, plug wires, o2 or map. Once you get that straight then revisit the pipe.

Okay thanks. What I'll do is put my free flow pipe back on then take it to the dealers to get a service and.maybe they can figure out what is wrong.

They will likely overlook the cause and automatically blame it on the pipe. If it will act up enough for them to see the problem with the stock pipe, that is probably a better plan.

Yep! I agree. Put the stock pipe back on and take it over.
