Got this reply from a friend that is Retired Army Special Forces. I bet that left a mark?

Had one catch fire in my pocket during an exercise! Kept a spare for some commo equipment we were using and it got against my pocket knife...rucking through the woods in the middle of the night and I felt something really hot on my leg, looked down, and my pants were on fire! Got it out and on the ground, but not before it burned my BDU's and leg!

This can also happen with the newer high current 1.2 volt rechargeable cells!
Yes, even AA cells have enough oooomph* to light up steel wool!
I used to design and build emergency lighting equipment that would illuminate when the
power went down so I was working with rechargeable cells a lot!

I believe any battery can do this if both terminal are conected by metal. the huge problem with the 9 volts are metal can touch both terminal real easy and you see the results.

I used to carry a 9V and some steel wool in separate plastic bags when I went camping with the Scouts, that was 40 years ago. Lit lots of campfires electrically.hyea:
