• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Weird problem with computer router

A couple of days ago I suddenly was no longer able to connect to Spyderlovers.com with my tablet. I tried two other tablets and a phone. No luck. But I could connect to every other web site I tried, just not SL. My PC connected just fine, as did my laptop in both wi-fi and ethernet cable modes. My tablet would connect just fine at hot spots away from home. The error was that the domain name couldn't be resolved so Firefox couldn't find the path to SL. In all cases the domain name server settings were the same so not being able to find SL didn't make sense. Why could I connect to every web site except SL? I even did a firmware update on the router which required a reboot. That didn't help. I finally came to the conclusion that my Linksys router had a hang up with Android devices that wanted to connect to SL specifically. Talk about weird. I've never encountered such a thing, nor ever heard of it happening.

And then it hit me. I had not yet done the most basic first fix attempt for all computer problems --- REBOOT!!!!! So I did a hard reboot of the router, i.e., turned the power off, let it sit a few seconds, and turned the power back on. Guess what? That fixed it! I have no idea what the hang up was but a power down and back up cycle fixed it!!!

Ain't technology wonderful!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead::banghead: :banghead::banghead:

Hmmer Time .

Or of course you could use my technique for tech repair------ My 24 oz. framing hammer or for larger items my 3 lb beater.:joke::joke::joke:

Interesting....🤔

Guess it falls under the catagory of "glitches" that we know so well here....:roflblack: glad you got it fixed. We have from time to time folks that can't log on and they are the only ones as well as some that can open attachments and those that can't...yes technology is grand....:gaah:

The fix didn't fix it!!

Well, it's back to step 3!! Tried to connect to SL this morning with my tablet. No go! PC connects just fine. So I go down for my morning coffee. Tried to connect to SL from the deli. No go! We both have CableOne for our ISP. I call up a friend in Nampa who has a new Samsung Android tablet and uses CableOne. She couldn't connect either. In all cases we can connect to other websites with no problem. Cold reboot of the router here at home does not solve the problem now like it did for a bit last night.

I tried doing a trace route from my tablet to SL. No go there also. But a trace route to Lamonstergarage.com works OK, as is does to other sites. So it appears to be some sort of problem with CableOne blocking access to SL from Android devices. I don't know about iOS devices since I don't have one.

I'm beginning to think maybe there is something odd going on with the Spyderlovers web server settings. When I input the IP address for it, 68.233.234.7, into my browser I get some sort of a SORRY page that indicates the address is no good. On the other hand it looks like websites are now blocking direct access via IP address.

Will some of you please see what happens when you put 68.233.234.7 into the address box of your browser. I'd like to compare what happens with what I see.

Next step is to get on the phone w/ CableOne to see if we can get it figured out.

CableOne will have to do some digging. The tech support guy confirmed the problem with his iPhone. He could connect with data connection but not with wifi on CableOne, just like me with my Android phone!

SL is blocked for somewhere for tablets. My nephew tried reaching it with an iPad over CableOne and couldn't do it. I did a Google search for blocked websites and Android and found an app called Hola. It has it's own browser and operates over some virtual private network. I installed it and voila!, I reached SL with my Samsung tablet! So the next question is, is CableOne the one doing the blocking or does Lamont have something in the web software that causes the blocking?

I'll ask him.

I know sometimes when I'm using my VPN, I cannot get into certain websites, my banking being one of them; as soon as I get out of my VPN, those same sites allow me on.

Four engineers are driving to a conference when the car sputters and dies as they pull off to the shoulder. After a moment of silent contemplation, the electrical engineer says; "you know, I bet the coil's bad. We need to replace the core." The chemical engineer says; "you're nuts, it's obviously the fuel's gone bad. We need to drain the tank and refill." The mechanical engineer scoffs; "you're both wrong. Sounds to me like a valve lifter is froze. We're gonna need to rip the block apart."
After another moment of silence the three look back at the computer engineer who says; "maybe if we get out of the car and get back in?"

This will not work either by design for security or an oversite by the webmaster. The webserver at 68.233.234.7 does not have a default site (domain) setup. The server does not know how to route the direct request to the IP so you get a default error page. Nothing wrong there.

I tried with our 2 Samsung tablets and 3 android phones and they all reach SL properly. Either on WiFi or Cell. It does sound like it may be an issue with your ISP. When you use the tablet and/or phone are you using them with WiFi or using the cell signal?

Strange that your PC works fine which would be using your internet connection but the tablets/phone do not. If they were using your home WiFi I would expect them to work as does your PC. If they are using the 'Cell' signal then I could see an ISP issues there.

Hope you get it solved, thanks
John

I haven't had any problem accessing SL using my Samsung tablet, at several different locations (private and public networks)

WiFi through my ISP. Cell connection works just fine, as does WiFi through other ISPs like the one at Home Depot.

From what I find with Google, and what a friend of mine who works for HP told me this morning, the Internet system can differentiate between computers and tablets and phones. Obviously the problem is some sort of security hitch with my ISP that targets the combination of Spyderlovers.com website name and using tablets/phones. I sure hope they get if fixed this week when all the engineering type folks are back at work. I suspect there are other websites that are blocked also but since I connect to only a handful via my tablet, and seldom with my phone, I haven't run into them.

It's interesting also that the block is only against the site name, not the IP address. I can ping and trace route SL with my tablet via IP, but not via name.

Turns out it wasn't a CableOne problem, it's a Google problem. I didn't resolve it, but it looks like it did get resolved, somewhat. I talked to a tech at CableOne and learned a couple of things. First, before any program starts traveling the Internet it queries a Domain Name Server for the IP address it needs. Windows OS is extremely impatient. If it doesn't get a response almost immediately from DNS1 it queries DNS2. Android and iOS are lazy and just wait for a response from DNS1, eventually querying DNS2 when it gets tired of waiting.

Apparently the Google Public Domain Name Server #1 at 8.8.8.8 wasn't (isn't) correctly updated for the SL URL. DNS2 at 8.8.4.4 was. The CableOne tech was able to easily swap the two IPs on his iPhone. When 8.8.8.8 was DNS1 he couldn't connect. But as soon as he swapped the two the connection was immediate.

I still think there is a name resolution problem for SL on the 8.8.8.8 DNS because my tablet will connect, but it takes many seconds to do so.
