There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Welding for fun

It's been a decade since I sold my stick welder. I just bought a little wire feed welder to make novel things. My friend David came over to help me dial it in and we made the little weiner dog, just working in the car port.

So today I went to work on building a welding table.

I thing I will widen the casters out the sides a little to give it more stability.

Nice work on the pup! When many of us were in high school welding was taught in shop classes. Alas, such skill development is a part of history - along numerous others that can save one some bucks.

All indications are that public education is shifting back to providing life and job skills and away from college prep. Even State colleges, in Utah at least, are creating programs focused on workforce skills. That's a good thing, I think, and long overdue.

Now your friends know you have the welder you will see them more often!! Keep your wire dry!;)

I'm the neighborhood welder...........

A tip... snip the little blob off the wire end if using GMAW. Usually not necessary with FCAW.

Right Pete!! 37 years of teaching Industrial Studies in both San Jose and Reno.

@Snoking1127, What wire feed setup did you get????

Since retiring, I don't have the full shop like I did at Galena High School. All I have now is a Miller 100, which I got for free.

Simder Mig-140PRO 5-in-1 on Amazona. I have a gas bottle on order along with pressure gauge. Welder is going to be on a shelf under the table, I am hoping the gas bottle will go there also.

I have decide to build turn down feet outboard of the narrow side on each end of the cart/table. One inch square tube across the ends. Drill a hole on each end, weld a nut there for a piece on all thread, with the golf club grip ends left over from the weiner dog as the turn down handle. Will rig up something for a foot on the lower ends.

So I can roll the table out of the mancave to the car port, turn down the four "feet" to keep it from moving around.

In 1981 we bought a new construction home that had an arched fireplace in the living room. Before the first fire, I had DW get in the fireplace while I held a piece on cardboard up to the opening, and she traced the opening on her side of the cardboard with a sharpie.

I bough two lengths of 2x2" angle iron and took that cardboard and angle irons to a shop that rolled them one flange out, one flange in to the pattern we made.

I then signed up for a welding class at a local junior college. The first thing the instructor said at the welding class was no projects. At the end of the first day he said to me, you do not really want to be a welder, however you are doing very well. I explained to him the project I was working on for my wife Christmas present, and he said go ahead and bring it in. I made the whole thing up as a single unit. The two doors, sliding damper on the bottom hinges etc. Ordered the glass and fitted it. And the final step was to cut the two doors apart. It fit perfectly and was made with heavier gauge steel than the one you could buy.

In 2003 or so, I bought a junk yard frame mounted hitch and rebuilt it to be a from receiver for my pickup with a commercial stick welder I had picked up from a buddy closing down a family business.

So there are some big gaps in my welding "career"!

This is true. Our local school district just bought the old E-Bay campus. They are going to move the school district there and build a much larger vocational training campus for all the High Schools in the district.

College prep is important, but so is vocational training and setting students up for the licensed trades at the community colleges.

Even college prep students are taking college classes from the community college, so they can get pretty close to an associates degree by the time they finish high school.

What we need now is more union and local company financed apprenticeships to capture the students as they finish high school. Every time they offer a deal for companies to relocate to Utah, we should require they provide some sponsorship for apprenticeship trades.

We know there is enthusiasm there from the youngsters from all their modified cars and trucks they build. One of my daughter’s favorite classes was auto shop.

I am down to attaching the steel plate to the frame and putting a floor in the base for the welder to sit on. Outriggers installed today.

When the gas bottle arrives, I will have to make a holder for it.

I think I am going to drill through the plate and tap threads into the angle iron top frame rails, and counter sink 4 screws to hold the steel plate in place.

Built hangers on for the cable.jpg - It fits under the table in mancave.jpg

Pressure gauge just arrived.
