What's the best windshield to avoid buffetting?

My wife ordered her Spyder with the touring windshield. The buffeting from it at around 60 mph is terrible. This evening, I put the stock windshield back on but she hasn't tried it out yet. I did notice that the stock unit has a slight turnout at the top. The touring shield does not. Have any of you fellow spyder owners had problems with buffeting? Is there any after market windshields available yet? I sent an email to Laminar Lip, but haven't heard back yet. I would like to hear other's opinions on this.

Well if you don't use the touring windshield because of this you could try to slowly heat up the top of the windshield and bend it a bit? Maybe while it's warm you could align it to the stock one...

I agree with Wijllie that you can try to bend it, but you'd think BRP would have done extensive wind tunnel tests on the shields, as is done on helmets, so see the effects.

It'll be a hit-or-miss job trying to improve aerodynamics yourself, and there's the psychological effect to deal with: "Oh, I think THAT's better...." your wife will think, but you won't be able to actually compare, since you'll have changed the touring shield.


I was just gonna call my dealer this week to order one, too, so you helped me hesitate...

I got to ride a little bit with mine and I think I may have had a little more wind noise but I'm not sure. I didn't notice any buffeting at all. I will say that now that I have it on it fits the profile of the Spyder better than the stock shield.

I understand your problem ;D

I didn't buy my shield for wind protection, I just bought it so it would cover the GPS better. I think the stock shield works fine for keeping the wind off of your chest but now I really like the look of the taller shield. :doorag:

some shops sell flip ups to mount at the top of the screen and can be set in different angles, it's also in clear plastic. So you actually can redirect the wind in different angles to your convenience...

I just made another change. I didn't like being able to see the backside of the GPS from the from so I wiped down the shield with some rubbing alcohol and sprayed it with some good BBQ paint. It's a simi-flat black on the inside and it looks gloss on the outside. I'm much happier with the look now. :doorag: :spyder:

From the photos, the look you obtained is the same as the smoke shield I bought for my Katana!

I fabed a 24" touring winshield but it's not quite tall enough for me. I have some clear Lexan coming and will fab another 26" tall. I might have enough material for a second one if you're interested.

Still cold here and the shield was no benefit. I was looking at the angle of the shield and unless it start flaring up, a taller windshield will bring it too close to your head (safety issue?). Let me know how it works out as I would rather more protection from the big bugs.

Already gave 2 options; either the extension or to bend the top of the windshield in the form of the original one, no need to get a 30 inch windshield...
If you need a big windshield consider a BMW instead :

I'm not sure how tall is tall enough. :dontknow: I've seen the eding that folks have used and they say that helps but I've read that it really dosen't do much at all. I think I'm going to try some side wings on mine to see if that does anything for the wind. I'll let you guy know what I fine.

Around town at speeds under 55 the stock windshield is fine, but at freeway speeds, I feel like I'm getting pounded... pretty tiring for a long road trip. Gustafsson plastics (www.bikescreen.com) has some custom Spyder windsheilds on their site and say they will make whatever you want. They list a 26" and a 30" tall; at 14" and 16" wide. Both have an upturned lip. There is a photo of one of them on a Spyder and it looks a little out of place IMHO. I'm thinking maybe about 20-22" plus the edging might work and still retain a reasonable profile. I do think that SAENG edge looks pretty sharp, too. Anybody tried it? :dontknow:

The reviews I've read have been mixed but for the most part most folks say it doesn't work. I did my own version of it yesterday and will see on the trip if it helps or not. This is wheelwell trim. :doorag:

May have already posted a note about this but...

I went with an after market 26" tall windshield
and attached it to the existing stock windshield to gain another couple of inches.

It does do the job, not in my line-of-sight and does not look too bad.

I'm on vacation at the moment, Las Vegas, and am unable to post any photos.

Didn't work with a darn. tore if off when I got to Daytona. Oh well :
