• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. 3 wheeler crash on the Dragon - was it a Spyder?

I was reading that a couple from Florida died from crossing the centerline on Tail of the Dragon just recently. It was reported they were on a 3 wheeler, no mention of make or model. Wondering if anyone knows if it was a Spyder or not? RIP

I apologize if this sound harsh, but it's been on my mind lately. This isn't really a comment about any specific accident but just a general reaction of seeing way too many headlines like this. About five years ago, my family was camping in the Black Hills while the rally in Sturgis was taking place. Nothing gives you a clearer perspective of how stupid some motorcyclists can be when you're going in the opposite direction driving a F-150 pickup with wide side mirrors. About one in ten motorcyclists were crossing the double center line into my lane on curves. Very few of them were aware that if I hadn't pulled my truck all the way over as they approached and crossed into my lane that their ride could have ended with tragedy.

While the majority of the riders are safe riders, there are some that just shouldn't be riding routes like the Tail of the Dragon or those in the Black Hills to test skills they don't actually have. It gets even more complicated with a passenger and/or extra luggage on the bike/trike. My whole point is we (I'm including me) all need to be reminded to check our ego from time to time on rides like this so we return home safely.

My thoughts exactly. I used to ride Harleys back in the day. We were founding members in the second local HOG club in the country. Once the popularity of that brand started to sky rocket in the 90s the stupidity of the owners got out of hand. Within 5 years most of the early members left for other brands, me included. I started riding Italian bikes and many other brands along the way, realizing I wasted my youth on inferior motorcycles. I can determine in a 10 minute conversation with a stranger if they ride a Harley. In general, they are not competent riders and expect other road users to get out of their way. This is just my experience over the last 45 + years. There are plenty who take riding seriously too, but they are in the minority. My two cents.

I was up there last week when that accident happed, the man driving the trike was 59 and had a heart attack. His passenger was the other fatality. The bad part is there is NO cell coverage along 90 % of the Dragon so getting help there does take quite a while. We rode through there the next day and had a great ride.

A very interesting article to read. So Sorry for those who are know longer with us. This was a health issue that took the two ryders.
Just Remember to Ryde Safe all the Time. Be careful about your Health.

Lack of control kills.
Riding outside of your skill set kills.
Stupidity kills.

Speed can kill if any of the above apply.
I have ridden and lead many groups through the Tail of the Dragon and other roads like that. Whenever I have a group, I ask them to line up in the order as to how they want to ride, with the faster riders in front and then slower ones in the rear. But I also say that if you think you are fast, chances are that you might not be, or you might be riding above your skill level. The key is that you don't want someone slower in the front to be slowing down someone who wants to ride faster, and you don't want anyone faster pressuring someone else to ride beyond their skill level. But I make it clear that regardless, you will never be left behind. We will have a designated point for us to wait and gather up to check on everyone before going further.

I’ve gotten too old to give a bugger about what other people think of the speed I’m riding at.

My days of riding even 9/10ths on public roads are long gone.

Now I’m retired I’ve got nowhere to go that’s so important that I have to arrive at a certain time, especially on my Spyder.

I’m responsible for the safety of my good lady wife on the back too, not just my own.

Life’s precious enough when you get old, and trying to shorten it by other means doesn’t seem all that smart to me.

Today’s riding was “fun”. Went south on I-15 from the Salt Lake valley to Nephi, then across country to Tory then on to Escalante. It chucked down with rain for half the ride.

The speed I was going for the last 40 miles to Escalante was dictated by the road going to 10,000 feet and at some stages it runs along a narrow ridge line with huge drop offs each side. I’m terrified of heights, so some places I was doing 30mph on the really terrifying bits. There was light traffic but I suspected some people wondered why I slowed down to 30mph in places.

My wife was all ecstatic about the views, me I was target fixated on just the road in front. Then the heavens opened up and I could no longer see the drop offs which made me a much happier bunny.

So tomorrow it’s off to Bryce Canyon.

That sounds like the Hogs Back above Calf Creek Falls. I you haven't taken time to make the short walk back to the falls you need to plan on it the next time you are in this area.
