60th anniversary of the USCGC AXE.

I'm flying into New Orleans and then to Morgan City La. for the 60th anniversary of the USCGC AXE. I'm meeting 2 of my shipmates there and hopefully there will be plenty more. This was my 1st unit in the USCG way back in 1976. I lived on that cutter for 4 years. I know every inch of her. See you there.

Her home port was Mobile Al for years. It moved to Morgan City long after I was gone.
Out of the 6 cutters I was stationed aboard, she's the only one left that's still plowing the waters.

Wish I was. I did however back in 1980 when I finished my tour on the Axe, I rode my ironhead Sportster with a 2.5 gal fuel tank from Mobile al home to Eureka ca. Now that was a trip I'll never ever forget. I could write a book on that run. Interstate 10 wasn't even completed yet.

Pretty neat to be able to do that. In four years you most likely saw quite a number of shipmates come and go.

On my way down from Washington the Arizona for the winter and to be able to ride the Arizona Spyder. We stopped at the Point Arena Ca Light House and climbed the 144 steps up the light tower. I climbed a few times back in summer 1967 to January 1969 when I have stationed at the USCG Loran A station 2 miles South on the coast.

The road to the old Loran station is gated, so could not visit that site. I did get a picture of the buildings from a distance. Quarters on the left and Transmitter building on the right. Site was given to a California University for a coastal research site.

I have been tracking my shipmates from a Loran station in Thailand from summer 1966 to summer of 1967. Started about 20 years ago hunting them down. There were 28 of us (construction/first year crew), and that number of them still walking the planet is going down and down.
