A HELMET QUESTION

My question is, what is the life expectancy of a helmet i.e. when should it be replaced? Is age the governing factor, or mileage? I do know that if a helmet is dropped, it should be replaced. Ours are 2 year old BRP modular helmets, with about 12K miles on the clock.

Mileage doesn't matter; only age, and whether or not it's been damaged.
There actually are suggestions out there to change your helmet every three to five years...
I tend to keep mine beyond that time-frame, but I DO start looking! :D

Why should you replace your helmet every five years?

The five-year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.

[h=4]"I dropped my helmet! Do I have to go buy a new one?"[/h]Generally the answer is probably not. Helmets are one-use items, but are quite durable otherwise, at least the ones we certify. Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance. Similarly if the helmet falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied, the owner must be aware that some degradation may have occurred. In general, the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside. The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, you avoid hitting stuff with your head. It can be difficult to readily determine if a helmet has been damaged, and the protective capabilities compromised without a thorough inspection by a trained professional. Some manufacturers may provide this service or direct you to these others that can perform these inspections. The Foundation recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it.

We just purchased new helmets. Our original helmets were 5 years old. We do have 1/2 helmets but we don't use them as much as the 3/4. I also have a modular that I use in cold weather. As the quoted article stated, "5 year replacement is a recommendation".

Depends..!

:agree: there is also the composition of the helmet. I find it hard to believe that a good helmet needs to be replaced after falling off the seat of your ryde. But then most medications warn that in rare cases causes death....a good helmet will give you the best protection in that 3/5 year period. You have to decide how much abuse from the elements it is getting. Do you use it everyday for extended periods or a weekend ryde now and again. Do you have harsh climate changes have you dropped it of the balcony. Some day they will put expiration dates on they like milk...do you toss your milk on that date..:roflblack::roflblack: I'm sure there are those waiting to sue...:banghead: I would say your good for a couple more years or as long as your comfortable with the quality of your helmet...I did tour the Bell factory and saw their testing facility...impressive...this was some time ago and they were only working fiberglass back then. At the time they were #1...

I'd go ahead and replace the helmet after 5 years. As you quoted, oils, solvents and ozone affect the condition, not only of the shell, but the polystyrene foam that cushions your head in an accident.
Besides, after 5 years you're going to be sick of it and want something new anyway.

I'd second the "one impact or 5 years max." method.

The stuff between my ears is worth it, at least to me.

Cleaning helmets

Don't want to steal this thread but as long as we are discussing helmets anyone have any tips on cleaning the interior of one?

I would start by looking at your helmet manufacturer's website - most have FAQ areas that cover that sort of info - as well as the "when to replace" info.

Replace

Most all mfg.'s say to replace helmets every 5 years or less, unless they have been in a CRASH :yikes:
I think I saw something in the AMA saying the same thing, I always replace mine at the 5 year mark.

bang head

My favourite bit from the helmet blurb above -
The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, you avoid hitting stuff with your head.

OK I'll stop :banghead:

PS to answer the real question - I've yet to have a helmet 5 years because I've spent ages trying to find a good fit - now have "Youth" HJC in "small" ... better be even more careful when :banghead: hadn't I, cos this one is brilliant.
Your helmets will be fine for another few years, unless of course you like the looks of another one ...

Well Gene if you take the MSF course and set your helmet on your seat you surely will get a lecture.

If your helmet falls 22" to a hard surface it's junk. Never looked it up but was one that got the speech:dontknow:

A helmet should be replaced every three to five years or seven years after manufacture. Also, if you drop a helmet and aren't sure about it you can send it to the manufacturer and have them check it. I dropped a helmet once from a short distance and wasn't sure about it. Sent it to Shoei and they sent it back and told me it was fine.

There's a lot of good info here

and there is some questionable info. also. Do some research it'll be time well spent.

I agree with all of the discussions and will add one more point. As safety laws change every year and new standards are developed, helmets are required to meet the new standards. Another reason to upgrade on a regular basis.

I usually change out helmets every three years or so. I get tired of them and want to get the latest and greatest. Have been sticking with the Nolan brand.

Research is good and I do recommend looking up the change out information from whatever particular brand you are using.

I left two 5 year old helmets with the ex when we parted company back in 2010. :roflblack::roflblack:
