Are you filling your oil to the full mark? 998cc

We've got a 2014 ST-L (SE-5) with just about 2000 miles on it. The first service was done at about 700 miles so we've got about 1300 miles on this oil change. So far I have added about 3/4 of a quart to keep it close to the full line. My procedure for checking is to pull it in the garage after a ride, wait about 30 seconds to a minute and then pull the dipstick, wipe it off, then screw it back in. Should I NOT be filling it to the full mark, is it going into the airbox when I do that?

Most likely you are blowing it into your air box. I never fill it more than half way between add and full. The 998 does use some oil, but not that much. Between oil changes (4500 miles) I usually add about a 1/2 quart.

With any vehicle I tend to aim fill 1/2 to 3/4 between the markers just to make sure I don't overfill, though if I'm doing a long journey over a short timeframe I'll fill close to the full mark just to give myself leeway on checking it.

The 998 motors do tend to use a bit of oil for the first few thousand miles so you do have to check it regularly.

When I swapped my air filter for a JT one I still found a very fine haze of oil on the inside of the air box on my RS despite being careful not to overfill.

We're planning a 3 day trip at the end of next week so I wanted to make sure it was full. Then after doing some reading I was hearing that filling to the full mark might possibly be bad for it.

2011 RSS-SE5; 23000 miles
1200 mile trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway and multiple other roads in the Smokies and 4 hours in I81 at 80mph and added less than 200ml when I got home.

Maybe I can chalk it up to break in seeing it's still only got 2000 miles on it. I'll definitely keep an eye on it and keep it at the middle of the range rather than at the full line.

IMHO- ride more, worry less. Don't sweat the oil level so much. Due to the design the level on the stick can vary quite a bit. Even an additional 30sec from one check to another can make a difference.
I've gotten to the point where I don't even bother with it anymore. I do 3k mile oci's with 4qts and typically drain just shy of 4qts. I add nothing between changes.

I think the forums really have people over thinking it.....

I fill mine to the 'Full' mark. But I don't worry about it as long as it is at the 1/2 way mark or above unless I'm going to be doing a lot of miles. But then I've got my Crankcase Vent Tube fix which keeps the oil out of the air box. Not really a 'Catch Can' in the pure sense of the word because this system returns the oil to the crankcase where it belongs rather than have it end up in the bottom of the air box or catch can (both to be dealt with as a maintenance item).
