DPS......MAYBE?

got on my spyder yesterday been really cold here in NH ...now i did post a couple weeks ago that my check DPS trouble code came up on my spyder and dee's... and it was do to the extreme cold ...someone posted a chart that showed that dps could shut down in -10 degree weather... is it possible (scotty) that some of the problems that people are having with there DPS is that they are acting erratic do to extreme cold weather conditions ...yesterday when i started spyder check dps code came up on my spyder and dees again ...i didnt bother to take hers out but mine i tried to steer and it acted like a lot of people have said that there spyders were doing ... i shut it off and tried again ...but it came back on so i pulled it back in garage ...this morning was warmer and no problem ....

My understanding is that the DPS locks itself out at low temps. This could cause a warning, and would be normal. In such a case, it may or may not cause a safety issue. I would doubt it was a safety problem if it did not revert to limp mode...just a warning that you had no power steering.

-10 degrees, WOW---I would think you might have more trouble keeping your butt from freezing to the seat.

My steering started acting up today and this is the coldest day that I have ridden since I purchased it 16 months ago. The temperature was only 41 degrees but that is cold here in Texas. Nothing major,it just required a slight tug to turn left.

Gosh, that's a surprise! :roflblack: Please tell me that you only started Dee's for fun or to swipe it, and you weren't silly enough to try to talk her into riding too.

Good points about a properly charged battery--- and operation in cold weather. I rode mine in 35 degree weather a few weeks ago and the steering was fine --- but I did have trouble with downshifting - had to kind of pull up a 1/2 click before pressing down to shift into 2nd and 1st.

I wonder if the DPS units in the ATV's have different ratings so they can work in the cold?

Probably a dumb question...but do any of their Ski-doos have DPS ?? I know the ATV's do.

You should have no problem what so ever at 41F with your steering. Don't assume DPS problem is associated with temperature that is far from extream. Take it in and have it looked at. At 16 months, you don't have much time left on the manufacture warrenty.

According to the shop manual, the steering assist is stopped at -10 degrees Centigrade, which is 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

I have ridden in 14 degree weather and I didn't like it. I also didn't have steering assist because I was on a Harley.
