There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. In light of the fact that out of the 9 Spyder accidents that have happened in the last year or so, 7 of them the Spyder didn't go over. In these accidents the driver and the passenger if there was one, flew off killing a number of them.

We didn't know in most cases if they were wearing the proper gear. Having flipped 2 cars in my life and the seatbelt saved my life, when I bought my Spyder, I started thinking about adding belts. Goldwings now have an option of an airbag. No belt, but it traps your legs so you either don't go off or you go off more slowly.

I breached this idea a year ago and the response was instant and all negative. It was obvious that most respondents were from a 2 wheeler in the past and hadn't thought about it for a milli second.

At my/our age flying without a chute, is going to result in us being hurt. My thought is that most accidents result in the bike staying upright, I have decided to stay with my bike and take my chances.

Yes in the interest of SAFETY, seat belts are mandated in most of the civilised word, BUT ON A MOTORCYCLE/SPYDER, what can i say????:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I have not thought about seat belts, but I have wondered why an airbag was not available. Especially since they were available as an option on the goldwing.

I've rolled a car and yes the seat belt saved me. But I've put a bike down at over 120mph if I didn't get away from the bike I wouldn't be here. I'm thinking if something happens even with a spyder I want to be able to get away from it. Air bag OK maybe but I'd still have to say no to a seat belt. Some spyders have gone up in flames and I wouldn't want to be strapped to one that did. IMHO

If the :spyder2: ever gets into a roll over or bounce off the wall type of accident, I sure would not want to be attached. I think an airbag like on the GW is a better option.

It would be nice to bail (if possible) rather than be ejected though.

Another argument for ATGATT.

A hard subject and we are going to hear it all before the thread runs its course.

You have my .02 now.

As I see it...

There may be a specific situation but in general...you do not want to be tied to an open machine should an accident occur. Watch the road racers when faced with a wipe out..they leap/dive off and aim for the grass. That leather/riding suit has a 7 sec life span when sliding on tarmac...:lecturef_smilie:

We've spoken about this in prior threads. Now that you've presented it in a Poll: I'll re-state my reasons for saying that this is a dangerous idea... nojoke

Accidents are going to be horrible. They're going to be expensive, painful, and a pain in the butt! (And that's just dealing with the insurance companies...).
Unlike a car; motorcycles have ZERO overhead or side protection. There is no crumple zone other than your flesh and bone. Strapping yourself on top of the bike only leaves you more vulnerable to more injury.
Some Examples:
if you are entering an intersection, and are T-Boned by another vehicle: there's a decent chance that the bike will be upended. Do you want to end up underneath 1,000 pounds of rubber, plastic, and steel?
If you SEE an approaching vehicle in your lane, and it's not getting out of your way: do you want to intentionally take a head-on collision; or at least leave yourself the option of bailing off the bike?
How about being rear-ended in traffic? If the scumbag behind you, starts crumpling your bike up: would you rather be IN the pile that's left over, or maybe thrown clear of it? (No guarantees either way in this one!)

In short: :lecturef_smilie: Seatbelts belong in an environment that is surrounded by a safety cage, and no place else!

There is an air-bag jacket or vest, I think. I saw someone using one at SpyderQuest a couple years ago. Maybe someone from that region knows that ryder and can give more info.

For the truly paranoid, there's a vest that we can buy for riding horses. You clip what I'll call its "ripcord" to your saddle so that, should you part company with Dobbin, the vest immediately inflates to provide shock absorption to your torso when your airborne phase ends. The rest of you is up for shattering, but your guts'll be good.

I think that's like what I saw someone wearing a couple years ago. It was an inflatable vest worn over the rider's jacket.

Though a seat belt might give advantage in a few scenarios, it would be a negative in the great majority of incidents. The air bag vest would probably be a better way to go.
