Help! I have a Dess Error!

I don't know any way to describe it but as stated above. I have a 2014 RT SM6 with around 4k miles on it. I never had any issues, but this morning, I turn the switch on, and a message saying "Dess Error" comes up on the screen. The radio, and everything works, but when I go to push the starter, nothing happens. There is also a symbol that looks like a key at the bottom. I am assuming that it is not recognizing the key. I tried both keys, and get the same message. Has anyone else had this to happen, and what could be the problem? I have a weekend getaway for the 17-19, and don't want to have any issues. Before this happened, I took the bike out for about a 90 mile ride with the wife. Afterwards, I washed the pollen off. After doing a quick dry job in the driveway, I backed it into the garage for a more detailed wiping off with a micro towel. Nothing out of the ordinary, just no start this morning. Someone please help!

You may have gotten something wet and it has not dried out yet. I would push it outside into the sun and let it dry out good, take the keys out and away from the bike so the computer can reset itself. Hopefully this helps.

I thought about that, but I cranked it after washing it in the driveway, and drove it about 200 feet back to the garage. As for taking the key out, I had this issue about 7:15 this morning, and decided to try it again around 2:45 this afternoon. That should have given it enough time to reset any computer errors.

Remember..!!

There were a batch of bad ignition switches and this may be one of them. Give your/some dealer a call with vin# and see if may be one with problems. They will change it out...:thumbup:

My dealer cleared the codes on both my keys yesterday because of the same problem and reprogrammed them. Buds didn't show any faults.
No DESS since then but I haven't' ridden it that much yet.

Leave it sit for 48 hours to allow the capacitors to drain off their charges. If you don't want to wait that long remove the POSITIVE terminal from you battery and touch it to the negative terminal; this will immediately discharge all the capacitors in the system. Re-hook your positive terminal and put your key back in the ignition and fire it up, it should now recognize your key and work properly.

Had my RS do the same thing early on in the break in period. Dealer could find no codes or any indication of any malfunction. When they came to pick it up to take it into the shop, it had set for 36-48 hours without being energized by turning the ignition on, they turned the key and it fired right up. :yes::clap::clap:hyea:

The iPhone app, My Spider, explains it as "Digitally Encoded Security System ". It has to do with reading key code and the computer generating the "ok" to start the engine. Quite smart.

Thanks for all the information guys. I think I will give this a try. If what you say is true, is there a way to keep this from happening again? Either way, you guys are the best:thumbup:

Guys, You are truly the best! I removed the positive battery cable, and did as you said, and it started right up. Again, I say thanks, and that this site, and it's people are the best.:firstplace:

On the home page on the right column go to Can Am Spyder. That's the BRP home page. On the top header click on owners, then click on safety. There you'll find recall vin lookup. Plug in your vin and it'll tell you if you have any open recalls.
