My 2011 RT has running rough issues and runs very hot - any ideas?

Hello, I have a 2011 Can Am Spyder RTS and I have an issue that I need some guidance with. My fuel had gotten really low and my Spyder started running rough on my way to the gas station. After refueling, I took about a 30 mile ride it was doing good, then started to run rough again. No error warnings. I noticed the fuel was dropping fast. By the time I got home the fuel gauge had dropped four blocks and I could smell something burning. I noticed that the catalytic converter was very hot and it had started to melt the drive belt. I took the side panel off and the parking brake cable popped off. I have no idea what the problem is. Any ideas will be appreciated

There are a whole lot of questions coming your way, so let me start!! You say your parking brake cable came off, did the brake lock up or was it freewheeling? Did you smell a lot of gas smell coming out of the tail pipe? What kind of mod's have you done to your bike, motor wise? It sort of sounds like you may have lost an injector and it's filling your motor with gas. How does your oil smell, is it a higher level than normal and does it smell like gas? How many miles on your bike?

Thanks for responding. I haven't made any modifications to the motor. I did smell gas. I will have to check about the smell of the oil and get back with you on the mileage.

Make sure you do not have a fuel leak. The fuel lines can go bad and if so, it's a serious fire hazard.

Your cat may be clogged.

Your brake may be dragging. Simple check. Release the parking brake and see if it rolls.

Could be low on coolant, or a sticking thermostat. Or debris in your radiators.

Not uncommon for the brake cable to jump the pulley. Not a good design. Age makes the cable stiff and it bows up instead of laying in the pulley track like it should. If the cable is out of adjustment, the pulley will travel too far. It should only travel 1- 1.5" from off to on. If it goes farther, it needs to be adjusted.

You can set the brake, once properly adjusted. Drill a hole below the track in the pulley about the midway point where the cable lays in the track. And zip tie it in place. This will keep it from jumping the track.

Good luck!
