Ugh! I was thinking I might go the route John mentioned:

The best defense is to know the capacity of the system and measure that amount out first before you start filling. If it all goes in with none left over, you are home free; but if it overflows and you still have some remaining in the filling container, you have an air bubble."
Measure in advance and pour a slow stream. Ugh, if there's a way to screw it up I will.
