Wife has a Tom Tom for her car, has anyone used the Tom Tom Rider?
Looking for advise on this product, pros and cons
Thanks, Wet Spyder

I like it

I like it and it works well and also comes with a scala head set (1). If you like something that is both useful and fun then you will like the Tom Tom Rider 2nd edition. It has many of the features of the Garman. It's smaller in size and therefore takes up less space. You can change the voices to computerized to movie stars. Many choices and you can download more and other useful things to make navigating easier for you. The blue tooth is not stereo, so blue tooth devices that connect to ipods, ect. will not work with it. However, connection with phone and scala head sets works great. Very good at high speeds and it even adjust volume to match speed. You will like that feature, so for the lower cost vs the Garman. It;s a winner. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I'm rather biased with this one...zumo all the way....have a 550...the new one is the 660 (Lamonster just got it)...for my needs, the 550 is fine...music, navigation, and phone, when coupled with an iphone and scala rider 2...

I read where the 660 has a slight problem-it doesn't show the cities/towns on the map display. Anyone else hear about that. True Lamonster:dontknow:

Have you used the TOM TOM to compare? :lecturef_smilie: if not beware.

All I have ever heard AND seen is that Tom Tom's suck. But thats just my experience.

After trying many, I am a garmin fan

Don't know if this is still true but a few years ago when I bought my 550, the Tom-Tom wasn't waterproof. Back then I kinda liked the Tom-Tom better. but the Garmin being waterproof sealed the deal. Haven't looked at any of them latley. Late last year I updated my map and software. Still works as good as when I took it out of the box. Had it over 3 years, and has been used in the rain several times. I have mounts and wiring on 4 of my bikes, all but the V-Rod. I also use it in my trucks.

Tom Tom 2nd Edition (water proof)

Yes, it is water proof and the only feature that I wish it had is MP3. However with the Scala I can connect my Ipod via wire directly to the scala. That's the reason I brought the bluetooth adapter only to fine out it will not work with it nor Zumo 550. The only motorcycle GPS that will work with stereo bluetooth adapters is the Zumo 660. Even garman is playing games with us. If you have the Zumo 550 go and compare the features with the Zumo 660. You will find that Garman gave a little and took a little and depending on the user that little may be a lot. I like both products, but for the money the Tom Tom works great. That's more than I can say about my Spyder, but that's another story.

I actually did a lot of research before I bought...checking on various cycle forums, reviews, etc...the 550 is a nice blend of everything you need, plus, customer support is far superior to any other brand...I have a magellan for my car when I travel and the help is not very good...with garmin, you get a person, and that person knows what they're doing. The reason the zumo 550 isn't dropping in price so much is because it's such a good product...others drop quickly in price...I wouldn't trade my zumo in for anything...except, maybe another zumo!

The zumo was the clear winner. Read the reviews from motorcycle forums...there are plenty out there...

:agree:

In fact, most places sell the new 660 for less than the older 550 units!

I did hear of some bug reports they are working on for the 660.

The 550 is just an awesome unit - all the other brands try to copy the Garmin features and quality - but usually come up short.

I did tons of reading before getting the 550.

But hey - if the TT works for you and you save a few bucks--- good for you.

I cannot imagine riding without a GPS now - I often just go in a direction and keep riding to end up somewhere random I've never been--- then just push the 'home' button and go home. I always have it set up to avoid highways, interstates, etc..... as I like the back roads!

I don't believe everything I read that's my problem I'm always questioning the answer...
That is why I was asking if any one has the TOM TOM RIDER .

After using both brands (Tomtom Rider, Rider 2) and Zumo 550) I just prefer Tomtom, but thats here in Australia.
I'm rather biased too, but I lean towards Tomtom...
I also have a Go 930 in my car.

sounds like you want to go with the tom tom. I read dozens of comparisons on the two and the zumo looked better. It is an awesome product. If you want to get the tom tom, go for it. It's not a bad product. With gps systems, a lot of times it comes down to a personal preference.

I think what sells me on the Tom Tom is the "glove friendly" aspect of it.
I don't have either one yet, will be shopping for one tonight. Can the Nuvi be used with gloves on easily like this Tom Tom?

Hi water spider

To answer your question,

Yes, I have the Rider 2 version and I cant fault it.

Like you I was undecided, but asking other bikers with a sat nav it soon became apparant that the Tom Tom is preferred as a value for money sat nav here in the UK, thats why I bought one.

Owned it for over a year now and it has not let me down in ANY weather.

I have also heard rumours against it but so far have not talked to a single person that has had a problem.

I also dont need to have the most expensive to show off !!!!!!
:joke:

Thanks for everyones review i got enough info to make a purchase.
Bones, whats your credit card number?

I didn't get the zumo 550 because it was more expensive...I got it because it was rated higher by many motorcycle sites...they are both good products, but really NOBODY touches Garmin customer service, if you ever have a question or issue...they update their products with decent frequency, and there is always a person to talk to when you give them a call.

Also, in the UK there are only a few roads and POIs...here in the states, we have much more info and the zumo is needed as it has a larger memory (just kiddin' ya)...
