Purchased a 2012 RT-S SM5. Loved it after the first few days of riding and now have 2,000 miles.
Here is my conundrum.
Listed my previous motorcycle for sale on craigslist. 1994 Honda Goldwing, always garaged, always well maintained (insert all the positive accolades here you wish - this motorcycle was beautiful).
Lots of interested buyers (and gawkers). Actually took it down for sale when I realized it was going to be so hard to get my Spyder in for the 600 mile service timely and I still wanted to ride. Local dealership was backed upped with new sales and servicing jet skis, etc.
Put back online for sale and got a buyer the first day.
HERE IS THE QUESTION
The potential buyer was a sweetheart. Was serious about buying right from the beginning.
When he showed up what I saw was a 66 year old man, heavy set (280 maybe?), with stubs for legs. In my mind I thought "no way this motorcycle will work out for him."
Regardless, I went through the motions of showing him the motorcycle. He never rode it, but got on and off it twice. His feet barely touched the ground. His fat little legs (they looked swollen to me - diabetes maybe?) could not make it over the seat when mounting the bike without him taking his right arm and literally lifting his leg over seat. Without trying to insult the man (too badly) I was very concerned about him buying this motorcycle and was suggesting such to him. Guess what? He bought the damn thing !!
He had pre-arranged financing the bike so he had me follow him on the motorcycle to his bank. The bank clerk processed the paperwork and cut the check to me. I followed him home and parked it on his front sidewalk. His wife and grandchildren came running out of the house to see the new motorcycle. As fat as he was -- she was a thin as a pencil. She was reminiscing about them riding like they used to (30 years ago) and acted all excited they would be doing so again. He drove me home, still cheerful. He was not oblivious to my concerns and reminded me he rides today (1100cc Shadow which I never saw).
Should I have sold him the bike? I was glad to sell and be able to take down my craigslist AD (boy, do you get a lot of nuts replying).
Just wondering what others thought?
By the way, the guy has a HUGE motor home; 3 boats (none that look like they have been moved in 10 years - including a large sailboat); a Model A Ford (under a tarp in his backyard and in need of repair and refurbishing); etc. The house they live in was modest, so I assume whatever money he has, he collects things and really won't (try to) use this motorcycle much.
Just left a spooky feeling with me he bought the darn thing.
