Valve Clearance checks - how to?

Hi everyone. I have a ways to go yet, but I want to be prepared....

The 2010 manual states the first valve clearance check inspection is at 10,000km (6,000miles).

I did a quick search but didn't find a how-to on this, and wondering if anyone has completed their valve check themselves and could share some information on it?

Thanks in advance for replies on this!
Cheers!

Didn't BRP initiate a service bulletin that changed the valve adjustment to 12000 miles? I thought I saw it mentioned on the forum. /ken krb1945

I think I read/saw that also, however, my impression was that the FIRST check/INSPECTION was at the 10,000km (6,000miles) service check and there after the adjustments/checks were at every 20,000km (12,000miles) thereafter. That is how I read the SM5 RS 2010 owner's manual.

Thanks.

Was it a challenge finding TDC (top dead center)?

Any tips?

Did you replace or reuse the cover gaskets?

Thanks.

I have mine done by the service, including valve shims for adjusted clearance. :doorag:

I took another couple looks, deeper into the shop manual and under the panels...

It seems pretty difficult to get at only one valve retaining bolts on the rear cylinder valve cover. To get it out by the looks of this, the fuel tank may have to come out (which means the right side foot peg assembly and maybe the brake cylinder may have to also come off :dontknow:). The front valve cover seems very straight forward - The other valve retaining screws seem doable once the airbox is out and the throttle bodies are lifted.

It is likely I will have the dealer complete the valve clearance check item on the maintenance list when I get near the 10,000km service.

The shop manual makes it look straight forward - but you may notice the hard part is a diagram and not an actual picture of the removal of the retaining screws. The diagram seems that the engine is out of the Spyder.
Thanks.
Cheers.

I did my own valve check at 12 thousand miles. Still within spec. and probably will be to 24 k miles or more. I did not have to remove the gas tank and I did replace the valve cover gaskets even though the originals looked so good that I think it was a waste of money. If I was out of warranty I would not have done it, but until my extended warranty expires I am following the BRP guidelines to the letter.
