Made my own sport shield

I purchased a 4 1/2" wider than stock windshield for my 2014 RT when I purchased it. I love the protection that it gives in the cold, but I would like a little more air in the summer. The sport windshield on the 2015's looks nice, but I wanted save a few dollars where I could to use on other farkles. I borrowed a friends jig saw, purchased a course wood blade, and went to work. I masked the shield front and back with masking tape, marked it around theedges and started to trim. Once it was done, I went over the cut edges with some 600 grit paper. It is not perfect, but I am very happy. Going to wait until around the first of May to give it a test run since we are still having some cool mornings, but I am looking forward to it. I might see what I can do to have it tinted before installing. Before, I had a 25" shield, and now I have a nice 18 1/2" shield. Well, here it is.

Thanks, but I was motivated to try it myself when one of my buddies said that he has done quite a few on his and other Harleys. They way I see it, if his hands are still steady after all the jarring around that he goes through riding his bike, I should be able to do mine:joke:. I would put it on now, but the wife has promised to go with me on a ride to Myrtle Beach in a couple of weeks. This will be her first ride with me (after we do a couple of practice runs next week), and I need to make her as comfortable as possible if I ever want her to ride with me again.

I love DIY'ers.....looks great :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:.......On tinting, maybe some of the film they put on the inside of auto glass would work for you.......it comes in about 20 shades ............( of gray ? ) :lecturef_smilie:...............Mike :thumbup:

I have been thinking about that, but how will that hold up if I get caught in the rain? I know they don't come off too easily, but wetting it is the way to remove the stuff, so I was a little concerned. Since it is so small, I might see if I can swing by a tinting shop and see what they think. If they will handle it for about $20-40 bucks, then I will throw them a bone. If not, I will attempt it myself.
There is also the spray on tint that is sold at auto parts stores. I have tried that before on a shield for my M109. It actually came out pretty good, but I decided later to just paint the entire thing.

Well, I couldn't wait any longer. After one more buffing around the edges, I decided to install the shield. At a height of 18 1/2", it gives the same protection as the original shield in the lower position (which is where I always ride with mine anyway). In the lowered position, it gives me a little breeze, but no bobbling. Since I always wear at least a 3/4 helmet, it is perfect.

I forget who sells them here , but they go the outside of the windshield and as far as I can tell it goes on with just slightly soapy water.....I haven't heard of them coming off .....even in the wind-stream.......Mike :thumbup:

The plan is to run the short shield from April-October. Then for November- March I will place my stock height, +4.5 width shield back on.

OH, thought you modified your +4.5 shield, now makes sense. I have plans to do a similar thing, just bought a used stock shield that I will cut down in a similar way. (Found that Skil has a special plastic cutting blade for jigsaws so will try that).
