Yea! Mother nature is really pissed.
We had sleet, freezing rain, and rain here in Vermont. They closed some of the DMV and state offices today due to the weather. We had an ice storm and the temps are dropping now. The roads were a sheet of ice. The current temp is 32 degrees. Earlier today, there were at least 6,300 people who were left in the dark due to power outages. By Monday evening, only a few hundred people are without power. But over in New Hampshire, there are still thousands left in the dark. By 9:30 A.M EST on Monday, 13,000 were without power across the Granite State. The crews are working to get the power back on.
Now we are having some colder air barreling back in this evening with strong Westerly winds too. Temps will fall below freezing and into the 20's this evening. Any roads or driveways that are still wet will re-freeze, along with any puddles or standing water.
So by Tuesday morning, temps will range from single digits into the teens, but it will feel colder thanks to some stiff Westerly winds. On Tuesday, the day will start with widespread sub-zero wind chill temps ranging from the single digits into the teens below zero. Temps will struggle to warm up throughout the day, with ongoing sub-zero wind chill temps into the afternoon. We might gain a degree or two through midday, but the actual temps will generally stay in the low to mid teens throughout the afternoon.
It will be blustery area wide on Tuesday, with widespread gusts between 25 and 35 mph. Winds will trend lighter by Wednesday morning.
The last of 2025 will still be on the cooler side, with single digit temps in the morning and low to mid teens in the afternoon, but there won't be as much wind chill. Most of Wednesday is looking dry, but widespread snow showers return during the evening. Snow doesn't look too heavy, but there could be a coating of snow on the roads going to and coming from New Year's Eve celebrations.
Snow totals between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning should be between a coating to 3" for most, with locally higher totals in parts of the North East Kingdom, Adirondacks, and the Green Mountains. Several of the mountains could get another 6" to 12" of fresh snow.
We might see some sunshine on New Year's Day, but it will still be chilly with single digits lows, and highs in the low to mid teens. Cooler temps stick around into Friday and the weekend, but the weather looks quiet, aside from the chance for a few flurries on Friday or Saturday.
Then next week, we will have widespread light snow.
Happy New Year!
(Yes, us sledders are happy!)
