• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

OK HERE IS WHAT WE FOUND OUT ON THE IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEM ON 2012 RT SM5 SPYDER. A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THE DIAGNOSIS WAS A STUCK IGNITION SWITCH AND SUBSEQUENT BLOWN 15 AMP FUSE. TODAY THE DIAGNOSIS WAS A BAD IGNITION SWITCH RELAY! BOTH OF THESE RESULTED IN THE SAME FAILURE---ENGINE STALL WITHING 3 MINUTES OF RUNNING FOLLOWED BY BLOWN FUSE THAT CANNOT BE REINSTALLED BECAUSE IT WILL BLOW AGAIN. MAKE ANY SENSE TO ANYBODY????---IM LOSING TRUST IN THIS BIKE. GOING TO TRY TO CALL BRP TOMORROW TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE THAT KNOWS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE GM OF THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNAPOLOGETIC AND TRIED TO SHOVE US OFF TO SERVICE MGR THAT DOESNT KNOW ANYTHING. HIS (SM) CLASSIC LINE IS THAT HES NOT A "MECHANIC". I DONT WANT TO BE BROKE DOWN BECAUSE OF BAD SERVICE--I HAD BIKES A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE THAT NEVER BROKE DOWN. THANKS FOR LISTENING.:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Electrical gremlins are the bane of most mechanics. There are some electrical experts on this site. Perhaps they can guide you in the right direction.

It is indeed sad that there are so few trained, competent, mechanics out there that can work on the :spyder2:.

But still..!!

They should replace the failing parts and send them to brp to analyze..unless they are grasping at straws...really sorry they are not up front and dealing with your problem...:banghead:

Tracking electrical Gremlins; is like trying to catch smoke in a bucket... At Night!
But your dealer is NOT sounding as fi they're truly stepping up to the plate on this one... they need to be in touch with BRP!
And the GM probably isn't the right guy to grab by the collars... it's the Service Dept that's got to do the work. If the Service manager isn't a mechanic; why was he hired? :dontknow:
It must have been for his great looks, and million-dollar smile! :D

You need to find a different dealer. One that is more competent! Tom :trike:

WILL CONTACT BRP

WE ARE GOING TO TRY TO CONTACT BRP TODAY TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY--BRP BUILDS THE MACHINES AND THEY SHOULD HAVE THE EXPERTISE TO SAY WHICH ONE OF THE DEALERS TWO DIAGNOSIS IS CORRECT. AND OBVIOUSLY THE 1ST DIAGNOSIS WAS WRONG--DOES THAT MEAN THE 2ND IS ALSO? ESPECIALLY WHEN THE FAILURE SYMPTOMS WERE THE SAME.

Please, may I ask you to use lower case instead of upper case. It's hard to read your text with upper case. Thanks.

Had a chat with BRP rep. . All they said was that the dealer can call them for technical advice--no kidding. They took our complaint and that was that. They have no enforcement on the dealer. I certainly can't force them to call BRP to make sure they are doing the work right. Someone said on the thread yesterday that their profits should be tied in to their performance like car companies. A friend of mine used to be a service advisor for a GM dealership and they would be docked heavily in pay if they had complaints on surveys etc. All I can hope for at this point is that the relay is the true problem and we are not left stranded on the street again.

A stuck relay can cause high current draw causing the fuse to blow. Is that the issue? I can't say for sure without actual testing. As stated, electrical problems can be extremely difficult to resolve. Especially intermittent issues.

I would look for another dealer if one is available.

What takes so long to get a relay

Dealer ordered relay on tuesday--said it wouldnt be in until Friday. Why would a relay take so long to get?

Take a relay out of a floor model and at least see if that fixes the problem before you wait several days and maybe find out you need a plan B. Some dealers have a knack of doing things the hard way.

Just a thought. Have you done any farkles or mods that may have affected the electrical system? Maybe there is a short circuit somewhere.

my god man .. you're asking someone to think outside the box. :yikes:

this is one of those things that just gets under my skin that a dealer or whoever cannot think one step ahead and it's always the customer who ends up waiting.

I am unsure which is the exact relay being replaced, but aren't there other relays of the same part number in the relay box that could have been swapped for troubleshooting.

As for add on, there is a post by Shaun Smoak on his sight where he had a customer bring in a Spyder with odd electrical troubles. Seems the system was probably overloaded and could have had an intermittent short also.

PICK UP THE SPYDER TUESDAY

Dealer ordered relay on tuesday--said it wouldnt be in until Friday. Why would a relay take so long to get?

Well I will pick up the spyder tuesday after a week at the dealers. The dealer says that the ignition switch relay was sticking on & off during the test. I did not add any mods to this bike. So for two weeks after the first incident it ran fine. I still dont understand why they just didnt replace the relay after the first failure. The customer (me) would have been happy, BRP wuold not have paid out $400 in towing bills and my dealer wouldnt have to listen to us yelling at him! Thanks to all spyder lovers for your help though, I appreciate it.

I'm glad to hear that you're getting your bike back! :congrats:
Here's to hoping that they found the cause, and fixed it fo you!

That, my dear fellow traveler, is what we call and enigma....

I call it "checking the box". There are times when the best techs on whatever vehicle are forced to do dumb things by supervisors or the oem. Rest assured this is a small in an overall sense compared to many non Spyder things I have seen. Does not make it right or less important to you.

With luck, just a bad relay, not manufactured by BRP, and replacement will cure the problem.
