Is it possible to replace the Output Shaft on a Spyder RT without pulling the engine? Anyone had it done like that?

Good afternoon,

My Spyder is in for the output shaft replacement. My understanding was that this work required the engine to be pulled, but when I talked with the shop where I took my bike (Can Am dealer) and spoke with the service manager, he said that they can do that work without dropping the engine. Is that truly possible to do this without removing the engine?

Not many Spyders out in the PNW and they said they do not work on many of them and I am pretty anal about that bike, so it is a little hard to have someone else wrench on my bike. So I was curious if anyone had this work done and they did not remove the engine from the bike? Thank you in advance for your replies...

I have had three 2018 RTs done, at three different dealers, all had the motor removed according to BRP instructions. BRP ships the engine removal cradle tool to the dealer on their first recall.

There is one good Spyder tech in Washington, way down in Vancouver Washington.

If you could dm me that persons name, I would appreciate it.

I haven't had good experiences with I-90. Bought 6 motorcycles and 1 Spyder from them. That place has gone downhill..... Sorry!

I thought I would give them a try as they are a little closer to home than the other shop. I don't want to disparage any shop, because someone may really like that shop.

I got the bike back today and they charged me for a filter, putting that in, and changing the coolant. I am not sure what all they had to do on this work, but they had it for a full week, which I told them was okay, as I'd rather get it back right than quickly. It was not terrible - $84. I know they would have taken some time working around my accessories, which I likely wired in like aircraft wiring. One of my aftermarket lights is now not working, so I need to fix it, but the Spyder seems like it's running okay.

They did not tear it down enough to do the plugs, so those came back home and that will be a someday winter project. The bike is running fine, I just figured that if the engine was out, they might as well swap them then. I asked how they adjusted tension on the drive belt and what they set that tension to, but I did not get a good answer, just that they used a harmonic device and set it to BRP specs.

The positives are that it seems to be running just as well as when I took it in, it now has new oil, coolant, and the warranty work is behind me now, so we'll call it a day.
