License plate light cover

Blue Star

Came home from work today and stopped at the post office, and found out that my License plate light (lens) cover is gone. I was wondering if anyone has a lens cover they want to get rid of? I have noticed how some have moved them or changed, so figured I would try this before going to dealership.

Lost mine for the 2nd time on Saturday -- cheap workmanship for the tag light and reflector. Not going to purchase the same assembly again from BRP only to have it break off again. Decided to order a combination tail and tag light from www.Denniskirk.com part number 212942 $53.95.
Scheduled to arrive at the house tomorrow.

License Plate Light cover

From what I read here this appears to be quite common!!!!! Sooooooooooo a word to the wise put some lock tite on the bolt or do what I did. Bought a license plate light at auto store $2.75, its small and does the job. Its DOT certified if the police can't read the plate I don't care it's LEGAL. And yes I lost my cover also. Locktite will not work -- Plastic - problem is the plastic around the screw breaks - the screew remains in place. Locktite will dedeslove the plastic. just bad workmanship. I definitely could have gone cheaper -- but figured a combo tail light, brake light and tag light was the way to go in LED.

This, thanks to McGuire1511 from an earlier post, one that a few of us have done. The tail light was purchased at Walmart.

The loss of the rear reflector is a common problem for the RS. There are two causes. The screw can loosen and come out, or the plastic under the screw head can break away, resulting in the loss of the lens, but not necessarily the screw. The loose screw problem should not be addressed with Loctite. Loctite crazes plastic, and will hasten the problem with the plastic breaking under the screw head. The screw cannot be tightened solidly, because the lens never bottoms out. If tightened too much, the plastic breaks...Catch 22! A dab of RTV silicone on the metal tab where the screw attaches, over the screw hole, before the lens and screw are installed, is a good fix. Be sure to let the silicone cure overnight before riding. Adding a additional few dabs of silicone where the lens meets the housing is a good insurance policy, too.

The lens can be reinforced at the screw hole with a small piece of styrene plastic from the hobby shop. and some plastic cement. Model airplane cement will work. Glue a piece of heavy styrene (or acrylic) on the back (inside) of the lens, over the screw boss. Let it cure overnight, then drill a hole to match the existing hole in the lens. Find or grind down a small washer to fit inside the screw boss, beneath the screw head. This should be as large as possible, without hitting the edges of the screw boss. Use the silicone on the housing tab's screw hole, as described above, and just snug the screw down. Too tight will break the plastic. Let it cure overnight, and you're in business for a long time to come.

I got mine a AutoZone like a lot of others and Tapped into a white wire under the rear panel and have a running and Brake light there.
You can see I,m Visable from the rear?:roflblack:

Thank you Scotty.

We lost ours somewhere between Minnesota and Cuba, MO last spring! Butch didn't want to spend $50 on the replacement so he bought a light at the auto store...looks pretty good.

After seeing the price ($43.49) on the BRP site, and how I cannot get just the lens. I am going to change mine with an after market light too.

I lost 3 of them before I finally figured out to use a slightly larger screw with some felt washers and then used black RTV silicone. She's good to go now. I wanted to keep the OEM parts on the machine seeins as she's an original Phantom.

Light cover

I've lost mine too. Did you replace the whole assembly, or did you figure out how to make just the lens cover work. Looks like the srew holes are different???

I bought a truck LED brake light from Truck-n-Stuff here in El Cajon, CA. Tapped into the brake light for my Custom Dynamics center brake light for the power and it works beautifly. $22 out the door. Much better than the $50 for the OEM light.
