oil change/maintance cost

My husband and I just bought a new Spyder RTS over the weekend. We live in South Georgia and were wondering about cost on normal maintenance We were told the first oil change will cost about $300 to $400 what about the second? A guy at work told me the second one will cost over a thousand is that true?

:welcome: Have you talked to your dealer about these costs? The initial break-in servicing is a bit more expensive. A lot of the pricing depends on what your dealer charges per hour of labor.
What do you mean by "new"?
2014? 2015? :dontknow:

Here's a comparison between the 1330, and the 998 bikes...

I hope that it helps!

My regular oil change by the deal is about $171. Or you can do it yourself for under $70.

The "first" one includes all the other "service" required after break-in on a new machine.

The "over a thousand" must have been referring to dimes, not dollars.

That depends on what year RTS you bought and how many miles you have by the second service interval.

The 3,000 mile first service including oil change on my 2014 RT-S was $255. After that compare the BRP parts prices for an oil change with the kits available from Bajaron, a sponsor here on SL. Remember, anytime the dealer has to remove Tupperware that's going to bump the price. There is a wealth of information, including videos, on how to DIY on many routine tasks to save some coin. Look at the maintenance schedule in your operator's guide to see the tasks that are done at the scheduled intervals. Most of them are in the Check or Inspect category that can be done by the owner. Others should be covered by your Spyder warranty except for routine wear items like brake pads. If you have purchased a 2014 or 2015 your maintenance costs are going to be lower than previous model years because service intervals have been extended and technology of the machines has improved.

PROBABLY..................OR

:yikes:....D.I.Y., this isn't rocket science and there are video's of exactly how to do it., with a minimum amount of tools. Also DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GUY at work He doesn't know what he's talking about .....you have the 1330 engine not the V-twin........Also stay here and you can learn tons of money saving tips ..........................and :welcome:....Mike

The older v-twin engine might have cost $1000 with a valve adjustment included. The new 1330 is a lot more friendly $$ wise. Tom :spyder:

:welcome: to the :spyder2: world.

Maintenance charges per hour will vary from dealer to dealer. Mine charges $110 per hour.

An average oil change/filter and check over usually runs about $350. The 1330 ACE has the first service scheduled at 3000 miles (break in) or so. Subsequent oil changes are recommended at every 9300 miles thereafter or once a year.

The person telling you about the famous $1000 service is most likely referring to valve checking. Was recommended every 14,000 miles on the 998 engines. Not an issue any more on the 1330 engines as they are no longer recommended or required.

I have been an advocate of no valve check service on the 998 engines until at least 50,000 miles. I had two performed (one at 14,000 miles and one at 28,000 miles) to keep it (per the manual). Neither valve check required adjustment--$800 out the door in both cases. My 2011 will get a check at 50,000 miles or so--if I still have it then.

Enjoy your new ride. It should cost you about $350 per year (tires excluded) unless you become a high mileage rider (10K plus) per year.

Spyders are expensive to maintain... best you learn to do oil changes, tire replacements ...was told by my dealer air filter, spark plug change are right at $1000 each... so enjoy and get your check book ready

Yikes... our oil changes were about $160. Tire change $60 (we supplied the tire). Forget the air filter and put in JT's and ditch the air box. Plugs are way easier to do without the air box in there.

If you have a ratchet, set of torx bits and some elbow grease, you can save a ton of cash by DIY.

I have the V-twin.....I will have the first oil change/new bike service done at a dealer. I may go to Shawn up in Washington State(great reputation, mechanic).

If I go to my local Dealer; they are very new to the Spyder. I am going to go in and check in with the mechanics....training, experience (they are so new to the Spyder, I doubt they have a lot of experience) ahead of time.

My question is.....is it fair or even correct that a dealer charge by the hour, charge you more than "normal" IF due to their own lack of experience...they take longer to do an oil change/service as an example. I see some pay 160.00 for an oil change, others over 300.00 . :hun:

After service #1; I plan to do my own oil changes and I will use the info. here on this forum to guide me thru it. Thanks for all the help on this site everyone !

DITCH THE AIRBOX....:gaah: :lecturef_smilie:.......I think that would be very un-wise , they have the 1330 engine ....What are they going to re-place it with ?????????...............Mike

On the JT's airbox delete; Is this available for the V-twin ? I have a 2014 ST-L 998 Is that similar to a cold air intake for a car ? And.....where do you get it ? Thanks in advance for a response and the advice !

RE: charges per hour. Most dealers have a shop rate book which states how long a particular job should be. They tend to charge that rate--if they do not exceed it--or--they get the job done quicker.

In the event the job takes longer--most dealers will charge the full time.

A good relationship with your dealer, and a talk about time charges in advance, may help with getting this muddy subject a little more clear.

I have been trying to find the year RT they bought
There are still new 2013 RTs out there for sale so where did you see what year they have
Thanks
Don

Any one know if you can buy the filter and the o-rings seperately for the 1330? I would like to try different oil on the next oil change.

Thanks

Oil change

Get the parts from BajaRon. Get oil locally (I use AMSOIL), use what you like. Once you do it you gain confidence in your skills and your bike. Get stuck? Call or PM. Joe

Last time I checked he did not the 2014 filters, I will check again.

I have done all my own service work including valves since 2011 so oil changes are a no brainer,

Thanks
