Returning member after years on a Goldwing Trike - anyone else done this? Thoughts?

I have a friend who made the switch last Spring from a Honda trike to a 2021 RTL, and he says the Spyder is so much easier to ride, likes the fact that is very stable, and that it tracks very straight. He just got back for the Winter snowbird season and we will be doing a lot of group rides. I helped him get his out of Summer storage at another Spyder friend's just this morning. We have 5 or 6 Spyder friends that ride together often.

Just remember that a Spyder only needs to be guided out on the highway. Try to steer it and it will be all over the road.

Thanks. My friend told me the same thing.

I am test riding a 2025 RT Limited tomorrow, but I am not paying $32000, so I will be looking for a deal or would look for a used '24/'25.

Quick question, I know it has Apple Play etc, but do they have places to plug in a headset or does it have to be Bluetooth?

If I was looking to buy new, that would definitely be my go to place. I have seen a 2023 RTL used for as little as $18k; I even found a 2020 RTL for $14.5k; so some used deals are out there.

We rode a Goldwing since purchasing one in 2005. Triked it a few years ago with a reverse trike kit installed by Hannigan. Just this year we were having suspension/front end problems and moth balled it and purchased a new '25 RTL S2S, and we are happy!

It's Bluetooth

I went from a Gold Wing trike to a 2021 RTL simply because there was no one left closer than 300 miles to service the trike kit part. I used to drive 150 miles for this, but the old guy retired. I much prefer the Gold Wing, simply because it is a motorcycle and I had been on the back of a motorcycle for many years.
The Spyder is mostly computer and I do not know where to start if there is a sudden problem on the road. The Spyder dealer is only 42 miles from me, so the RTL was the best decision for me. I have not been disappointed. The RTL is as comfortable as the GW trike.
One plus is that it's fully automatic, so that cut way down on stiffness in the left hand I had noticed as time goes on.
I prefer the heavier weight of the GW trike and the 2-wheels-in-back configuration. Until I changed the rear tire the RTL would fishtail on dry pavement very easily from a standstill - no matter how easy I was on the throttle. The Spyder is a little light in a heavy cross-wind but still very manageable.
The reverse on this RTL is spectacular compared to the GW trike.
The trunk is very roomy and the frunk is handy. The side-bags don't hold that much stuff very easily and I have to keep them locked at all times as they are prone to opening as I ride down the road - but the dashboard screen tells me it has come open. I basically don't keep anything in them as I am afraid of losing it. The GW trike lower trunk held more stuff but the side bags were sacrificed due the trike kit. The RTL trunk lid opens such as it does not disturb the passenger sitting in front of it, whereas the GW top trunk lid sharply bent the passenger forward if it was opened very far.
I was immediately disappointed in the RTL paint job - very thin and, brand new, the black paint had swirls that looked like scratches on the backseat speaker boxes. Actually, I believe the paint was not well set when they wrapped it in cellophane for shipping. Any hard bug hits will scratch or make a dent in the paint. The GW paint job was superior.
I do keep the tire psi down all around from the manufacturer's recommended psi as the thing feels like its on beach balls and squirrely to handle if they are up that high. The dealer, true to his oath, always airs them back up at service time and I always put them back down when I get home - but always a squirrely ride at 75-80mph on I-10 on the way home!
Overall I have been more pleased with it than I thought I would be. Keeps me "out there" enjoying the air and scenery as I did on the GW trike and all the 2-wheelers that came before. So far, knock on wood, I have not had any problems with it.
I believe a big part of this is due to the dealer who set it up out of the box. Everything was done right, no steps missed. I had been told he was very good and highly recommended. In fact, the day I was there to pick up my brand new RTL a gentleman coming from 200 miles away had arrived with his Spyder on a trailer to have my dealer go through it, as he had been having many problems with it that his dealer could not resolve and he had heard how good my dealer was. Later, on another visit, Rocky told me that Spyder had not been set up right at all, but he got it all corrected.
Good luck and wishing you miles of smiles whatever you choose.

My Goldwing trike carried me over 50,000 miles. My 2022 S2S, has now been ridden through the 48 contiguous States. They are both excellent touring machines. Neither bike ever left me stranded. Honda dealerships are numerous and provide great service.

My only complaint on the Goldwing Trike was this: Going down a steep mountain road and hitting a hairpin turn spiked my adrenaline level. Lift a rear wheel and the ride would be over. I remembered my childhood tricycle and going head over the handlebars. On the S2S, the same situation would be scary, but probably not deadly.

HI poppajim,

Sorry for your loss. I went from an HD Swtichback 2 wheels in 2012 to a 2012 RTS SE5 Spyder. I have no regrets with the Spyder. I am now on my 3rd Spyder (I also had a 2014 RTS SE 6, since sold; and my current Spyder is a 2023 F3 LTD SS).

I did not have any learning curve with the 2012 RTS-SE 5 at that time.

When you are going thru the corners push thru the corners. Do not lean. Go with any Spyder model 2014 and up they have the "1330 Ace Engine" which is quieter, smoother, low torque, and less Rpm's. Higher alternator wattage (to power all of your electronic devices), comfortable seats, etc. It has ABS brakes, traction control, Stability control, DESS system.

When I was on a Honda Trike as a passenger, the driver had a hard time steering it.

I have owned and ridden (more than) several Harley TriGlides, a 2013 Goldwing Motortrike conversion trike and three Can-Ams. A 2011, a 2017, and my present ride a 2024 RT-L. I can tell you that the Goldwing was a step up from the Harleys on comfort, and the Can-Ams were an even larger step up on comfort from the Goldwing. the Goldwing was bullet proof on reliability and the Can-Ams are still trying to find their place in that category. They have so many gee-whiz electronic features that some bugs need to be worked out. apple CarPlay among them. I have to admit that I am intrigued by the new Goldwing DCT trikes and would consider one if they weren't so danged expensive. I don't know if they ride any better than the '13 that I had but I am getting a little tired of shifting gears. 2026 Harley TriGlides are teasing major upgrades so who knows what the future holds for them. For right now though I am satisfied with my 2024 RT-L and would recommend that you seriously consider one and be sure and test ride one for more than a trip around the block. It can take some time to feel comfortable with it. If possible see if you can keep one overnight and ride in as many different traffic situations as youn can.
