I went from a Gold Wing trike to a 2021 RTL simply because there was no one left closer than 300 miles to service the trike kit part. I used to drive 150 miles for this, but the old guy retired. I much prefer the Gold Wing, simply because it is a motorcycle and I had been on the back of a motorcycle for many years.
The Spyder is mostly computer and I do not know where to start if there is a sudden problem on the road. The Spyder dealer is only 42 miles from me, so the RTL was the best decision for me. I have not been disappointed. The RTL is as comfortable as the GW trike.
One plus is that it's fully automatic, so that cut way down on stiffness in the left hand I had noticed as time goes on.
I prefer the heavier weight of the GW trike and the 2-wheels-in-back configuration. Until I changed the rear tire the RTL would fishtail on dry pavement very easily from a standstill - no matter how easy I was on the throttle. The Spyder is a little light in a heavy cross-wind but still very manageable.
The reverse on this RTL is spectacular compared to the GW trike.
The trunk is very roomy and the frunk is handy. The side-bags don't hold that much stuff very easily and I have to keep them locked at all times as they are prone to opening as I ride down the road - but the dashboard screen tells me it has come open. I basically don't keep anything in them as I am afraid of losing it. The GW trike lower trunk held more stuff but the side bags were sacrificed due the trike kit. The RTL trunk lid opens such as it does not disturb the passenger sitting in front of it, whereas the GW top trunk lid sharply bent the passenger forward if it was opened very far.
I was immediately disappointed in the RTL paint job - very thin and, brand new, the black paint had swirls that looked like scratches on the backseat speaker boxes. Actually, I believe the paint was not well set when they wrapped it in cellophane for shipping. Any hard bug hits will scratch or make a dent in the paint. The GW paint job was superior.
I do keep the tire psi down all around from the manufacturer's recommended psi as the thing feels like its on beach balls and squirrely to handle if they are up that high. The dealer, true to his oath, always airs them back up at service time and I always put them back down when I get home - but always a squirrely ride at 75-80mph on I-10 on the way home!
Overall I have been more pleased with it than I thought I would be. Keeps me "out there" enjoying the air and scenery as I did on the GW trike and all the 2-wheelers that came before. So far, knock on wood, I have not had any problems with it.
I believe a big part of this is due to the dealer who set it up out of the box. Everything was done right, no steps missed. I had been told he was very good and highly recommended. In fact, the day I was there to pick up my brand new RTL a gentleman coming from 200 miles away had arrived with his Spyder on a trailer to have my dealer go through it, as he had been having many problems with it that his dealer could not resolve and he had heard how good my dealer was. Later, on another visit, Rocky told me that Spyder had not been set up right at all, but he got it all corrected.
Good luck and wishing you miles of smiles whatever you choose.
