• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Has anyone ever mounted the transponder part of a key next to the ignition to bypass DESS?

Has anyone ever taken the transponder part of a key, and simply mounted it underneath the bezel next to the ignition? Seems like a simple way to "bypass" the system without doing anything.

Then a regular key would work, right?

(Of course it's probably been done and my search-fu was just not good enough to uncover the thread)

Because then you could use unchipped keys.
It only takes one key to run it and one as a spare, as the spare is needed to get a new key made if you lose the main one. My spare is hidden in a locked compartment, I have a key cut that is always on my key ring in my pocket that unlocks the compartments.

Or you could just get the DESS disabled, cos as a 'Security System', that has been proven to be a tad problematic on many of the 2014 to 2018 Spyders across the model range, and on some newer Spyders too, albeit only 'a few' of the newer machines... Bearing in mind that if the DESS fails, it's often in a way that's not just something you can work around - it's a 'contact help and get it towed somewhere to wait until they can source and replace a bunch of components' type of job, while you sit around Spyderless for a few days (IF you're lucky! 😒) cos your Spyder just won't run AT ALL until the DESS issue is sorted! 😣

So even if you '... simply mount the transponder part of a key ...' anywhere that works, chances are pretty high that your Spyder is still not gonna run at all if/when your DESS fails, no matter where you are or how many transponders &/or keys you have!!😖

Just Sayin' ;)

Does it allow one to push the key in and turn to open the seat and frunk?

IPS ignition key cover

The IPS ignition key cover is a very esthetic addition to my F3S. It looks like it should be stock, but better! Easy to install Esthetically pleasing Ease of operation, for ignition, frunk opening & stock fuel door opening.
I highly recommend!

Hi, FWSpyder,

I started a the following thread - DESS Key Code Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on Aug. 13th, 2015 this thread has a lot of excellent info about the DESS.
It is a long thread.

Also look at the last post which was posted by Peter Aawen #1,100 he posted on Jan, 31, 2024.

The above thread is in the "Spyder RT Touring" on this forum. It is on the top of the list.

Or go to the Search button/tab (which is at the top right hand corner of the page, where it says 'Notifications (a bell shaped icon), and has the Direct Message button/tab (which is an envelope icon).

Good luck
Deanna

Does anyone know the part number of a non-chipped key blank (Ilko?) for a 2012 RT?

This adds a little more of a query to the 'Why?' question raised above about whatever you want to do to the DESS - the pre 2014 Spyders didn't have any DESS issues, their security system just worked!! It was only once someone at BRP decided to fix something that wasn't broken that the 2014+ Spyders started having DESS problems... 😖

Buut, that aside, a quick search (by typing 'Key' into the search field; checking the 'Search titles only' box; and hitting the Search button :sneaky: ) suggests that all Spyders use the same ILCO X-270 blank, altho you might need to use a file to chamfer the edges of the wide bit of the handle end in order to get the key to push IN far enough to turn it safely/properly. ;)

I only JUST became the owner of a 2012 RT SM5 A&C about an hour ago. I was not aware that the 2012 didn't have DESS problems, but I am glad to find that out.

And I do know how to search, did so, and did not find the answer I needed.

But THANKS!

BTW, am I missing a panel?

Nope, you're not missing a panel.

The 2013 & earlier Spyders never had that right hand side grill thing in that hole (or the bottom one either!), altho some of the 'alleviation efforts' for the searing heat blasting out of the Dragon's mouth that is that hole on 2013 Spyders which haven't yet had the heat recall done did attempt to cover/deflect it (yes, amazingly, there are still some of them!); and besides that, quite a few owners decided they wanted one, and so modified and fitted the grill that became available with the 2014+ Spyders. ;)
