Anyone else had an Oil Leakage Issue like this? - UPDATE

I wouldn't be surprised if they would authorize this kind of repair on an aero engine. From the report I read on the repair, a lot of research went into this before they authorized it as the repair.

They didn't split the case and do the inside. The patch is just on the outside. The printout that I read where they did both sides, was done at another area, near the oil filter, where it comes off and they can access it. At the time I asked about that and they stated that the repair is the same, but just on a different area. I was a bit worried about this being applied to the inside for the very same reason. At least if this fails and falls off, the leak will just come back. You can bet that I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

As for what it does for the resale value, who knows. When I purchase a Vehicle, I tend to keep them for a while. Our car we bought in 2014 new (Dodge Charger) and still have it with no intention of replacing it. My other bike is a 2008 Yamaha FJR and I bought it new when I retired as a retirement present to myself, and have no plans on selling it either. I still have my old 76 KZ 900 (even thought it's not running and needs a lot of love!)
Well if it’s not on the inside too, I guess I’d be happier about it. I couldn’t understand why if they have to split the cases to get inside, why they didn’t just replace the case. That bit was making no sense to me.

The main thing is that you are OK with it. It’s your bike and therefore ultimately down to you as to whether you find the solution acceptable or not.

I wasn’t worried about the rate of oil leak leaking out if the patch failed, but I was worried if there was an inner patch that became detached. That was the bit I was concerned about.

In some ways it’s comforting they have the materials technology to fix such issues if even temporarily. On the other hand it’s concerning that they have a porosity of castings in sufficient numbers that they know how to patch it. There’s a dichotomy for you.

Well, good luck and I hope it holds for the rest of the life of the bike.

Got my ride back last night. When I picked her up they told me that the tech noticed a small amount of coolant coming out of the water pump when the motor was out, so they replaced my water pump also. So a future problem avoided there. Just for the heck of it I asked what this would have cost. The Service mgr told me just over $4k. So the $671 I paid for the B.E.S.T. warranty paid off. Now I am going put some miles on her and make sure that the issue is cleared up. Only thing is that right now, we are under an "extreme heat warning" for the next week (100+ Degrees) So I might wait a bit before I do any serious riding.

Another update
I finally got to get out and put some real miles on my Spyder. I have been keeping an eye out on the leak, and it has come back (or I should say - it's still there!) I took it back to the shop and they used a endoscope to look at it. The leak is coming from around the patch they did (they showed me the pictures). Rick (the service mgr) said that he would send this in, but that I might want to call the customer service dept and talk to them also. He gave me the case number to give them to look up my issue. On my end, I was told I had to go through the service dept. but they did add a note to my case that I called and what I said. I told them that I didn't want another "patch". I feel that the motor needs to be replaced, seeing that it has a defective engine case. I told Rick what they told me, but now he is waiting for a response (this was last Fri).

I am posting this for future reference for anyone else who might run into this problem. I was on Facebook last week, and in a Spyder RT group, a guy in Canada posted that he is having the same issue with his case leaking. I did a reply and gave him a small description of what I am going through.

Now we shall see how much rapport your dealer has with the mother ship! I 🙏 that you get what you want, after all you did not ask for, or cause this problem! Good luck!!

I must admit, I was a bit worried about their solution, but you kind of think they must know what they are doing and that they have successfully done this before. I guess not.

I think it's got to the state where an engine swap is in order. It's got to be simpler and much cheaper in warranty labor costs for BRP to do an engine swap rather than a rebuild this one into new cases at this point.

I checked back in to find any updates. Rick told me they sent him a reply that this has been forwarded, what ever that means. I contacted customer service again, this time by email through their Web page. Giving my Service account number so they could reference what's going on, and see if I can push things along. I got a "Survey Reply". In it it asked me how my experience was and if I was content on how Leidy resolved my issue. Thing is that I got no contact from anyone on this. So I replied so and in the comments told them that. So No I am not happy with the results.

I also was a bit worried about their "Fix". But it was what Rotax said was the repair for this issue. When I was at the shop last Fri, I mentioned that they're getting to where an engine swap would of been more cost effective. On BRP's web page (I think I found it under a parts search) a new engine (in the crate) runs just over $13,000 (retail). I have asked Rick what the cost is that we are at if I didn't have the warrenty. He added it up and it came to just over $5,000.

Normally the wife and I go on a long trip around this time of year. Head up into Ore, into the mountians, a run along the Coast, we have even taken a trip along Route 66 to Texas then loop back through Oaklohama-Colorado-Utah-Nevada. Usually spending 5 to 7 days on the road (the Texas one took us a bit longer almost 3 weeks stopping to visit family in Texas). We have been doing this for many years, starting back on my old KZ900 (those adventures are stories in themselves). This year, I have missed out on a lot of riding, since my Spyder has been in the shop almost all summer, and now the issue is still not resolved, so I am not planning any trip this year.

Perhaps it might be time to get an attorney involved. I hate involving attorneys in anything all the time I am getting reasonable responses from the manufacturer to back up their product, but I think you have been more than reasonable at this point. You have tried their low cost (to them) solution and you have acted in good faith to this point. Now the ball is in BRP’s court.
