• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

engine oil ????????????????

Has anybody actually had a failure due to different oil blend/type in a Spyder? I don't recall any such posts here since I have become a member.

The failure would likely be down the road...literally...you can get away with a non-recommended oil for some time...by the time you figure it out, you will likely discover some significant engine damage.

I stick with BRP...I don't ride as much as many of you so it's not a biggie for me to have the dealer change on the scheduled maintenance visits.

Oil breaks down...why would you buy so much?
Oil does not break down except in use, although grease will break down fairly quickly in storage. That is especially true of today's oils and synthetic oils. I have had vast experience with the lubrication of thousands of pieces of industrial machinery, and a solid relationship with the manufacturers. These are their words, not mine, but they are borne out in my experience.

NancysToy, is 100%...

correct on the new synthetics not breaking down. I have seen some traveling salesmen that ran my preferred pure synthetic oil and at 25 thousand miles I would pull a sample and send it off for analysis. The oil was still good for another 20 thousand per the lab analysis. We pulled samples at 75 thousand miles and the lab tested and said the oil was still good but we just couldn't bare it any longer so we changed it. Also keep in mind at that time we were changing the filter every 6000 thousand miles. Now that change has increased to 12000 miles or one year.

However, I know where there is a long haul mack that has over 600 thousand miles on it and it has never had a complete oil change. Change the filters top up, lab test and the oil is still good as of the last time I check a few months back.

Me... I would never run any oil that long even if I did have a considerable amount added at filter change top up. /Ken (krb1945/OEM discount oil change kits)
